Get Your Drink On With These Geeky Cocktails

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 08:14 PM PST

It doesn’t take a lot of talent or imagination to come up with a new cocktail, especially if you like to sip on the strong stuff on a regular basis. Drinkers know what tastes good, what goes well together, and how to make your drink turn a pretty color in the glass, all without ever needing to crack open a Bartender’s Bible.

These recipes aren’t going to win any awards for being the most creative concoctions, but that’s not the point-the point is they are all based on geek culture, and actually apply quite well to the characters from which they draw inspiration.

So, let the Drunken Moogle pour you a delicious sounding Dirt Block (Minecraft), or blow fireballs with a Charizard (Pokemon), all while drinking in moderation, of course.

Cool Retro Styled VHS Tape Notebooks

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 08:12 PM PST

These VHS tape inspired notebooks ooze retro charm, and will probably get shoved into the nearest VCR by a curious senior citizen if you’re not careful.

Created by Peleg Design, they even come with a plastic slipcover and adhesive labels, to complete the old school cool. Label them as something sick like Faces Of Death or Snuff Film and you have a journal even your nosiest family members won’t want to crack open.

Carved Wood Paintings

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 07:45 PM PST

Kronid Gogolev’s idealized scenes of life in old rural Russia are excellent by themselves. But what makes them unusual is that he carves them like they’re paintings, frame and all. View many more of them at the links.

How to Make Imitation Roses from Coffee Filters

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 07:18 PM PST

Sasilla’s instructions (in both Polish and English) appear to be straightforward. Just get some cone-style coffee filters, dyes and sponges to get started. From a distance, they’re quite convincing.

Dr. Seuss Does The A-Team

If Dr. Seuss had composed a cartoon version of The A-Team, the improvised combat vehicles would have been wackier. As it is, this image was created by deviantART user DrFaustusAU.

Link Takes the Triforce of Courage to a Pawn Shop

Link needs a bit of money. Since he can find pieces of the Triforce anywhere, why not sell the one he has? Unfortunately for Link, he’s up against Rick Harrison, the owner of the pawn shop featured on the reality TV show Pawn Stars. Link has many skills. Haggling is not one of them.

The Dressing Room Of The Future

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 04:34 PM PST

This seems like the kind of invention we’ve needed for a long time now-a virtual dressing room that allows you to try on clothes without all that nudity and pointless human interaction.

There are no salespeople to hard sell you into buying that ill fitting garment, you simply try it on for size via touch screen and see what you think for yourself. Here’s how it works:

The 'Swivel' system works by using motion-sensing technology of Microsoft's Xbox Kinect, and a live video feed as 'mirror images'.

When users stand in front of the system, the webcam would project an image of the user on the connected screen, along with shopping categories, such as clothing, jewelry and handbags.

To try on items, users wave their hands to select categories and items. Items would be digitally overlayed on the live image of the users.

When users turn to their sides, the items would also move along with their bodies.

Swivel takes into account the body types, and would make the items appear as it realistically would. The system also gives users recommendations with their outfits.

Users may also layer items, or change backgrounds to "put the look into context", and send an image of the final look to friends and family for approval.

The Jetsons had this technology way back in the 1960s, so why has it taken us so long to integrate this technology into our modern shopping routine?

Watch The Trailer For Wes Anderson’s New Movie Moonrise Kingdom

I’ve been a fan of Wes Anderson’s movies ever since Rushmore brought his simplistically surreal form of storytelling, and endearing characters, to life on the big screen.

In his latest film Moonrise Kingdom he brings another cast of quirky yet relatable characters to the stage, and my heart swells just thinking about the strange situations these characters are about to find themselves in, and the hilarious moments which will be replaying over and over again in my head as I leave the theater.

Retro Video Game Cover Art From Very Weird Games

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 03:44 PM PST

The good folks over at Comics Alliance have put together a gallery of unusual retro video game covers, and I’ve gotta say most of them are hilarious, because I think they sound like a ridiculous concept, yet I am strangely compelled to find and download the ROMs so I can play these crazy games!

From Ninja Golf to Skateboard Joust, these games were probably left on the shelf for the most part, and now we can look back with a laugh and ask ourselves “What were they thinking when they made these games?”

My only meh is the fact that Renegade and Two Crude Dudes are on the list, because I played the hell outta these games as a youngster, and still have fond memories of them both in the arcade and on the old consoles. Do any of these video game covers bring back fond memories of your childhood?

e-Urinal Tests Your Urine And Reports Health Issues

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 03:31 PM PST

A while back I posted an article about a urinal which doubles as a video game, and this invention was actually well received, even though I still don’t understand the allure.

But this concept design for an e-Urinal really makes sense to me–a unit which is able to scan your urine and report possible health issues to you while you wait. And, while this particular model may still be in the conceptual stage of development, I can see this kind of thing catching on and changing the way our health issues are diagnosed.

Let’s just hope you don’t have to show proof of  health insurance in order to use this urinal, or I predict a lot of wet floors surrounding these things!

11 Insane Features of Normal Human Anatomy

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 10:11 AM PST

The human body may seem very familiar to you, especially your own, of course. But there’s some weird things going on that you might not yet know. Like the way you glow!

Fireflies and jellyfish glow, but humans? Believe it. The phenomenon is a natural byproduct of the metabolic process, and scientists have long been aware of the presence of bioluminescence in most living creatures. But it wasn't until 2009, when a team of Japanese researchers developed a camera 1000 times more sensitive than the human eye, that human bioluminescence was captured on film. The light show apparently works on a 24-hour cycle — brightest in the late afternoon and on the cheeks, forehead and neck. Next time someone tells you "you're glowing," you can take it literally.

That’s just one of 11 insane features that you probably haven’t thought about in the human body. Bone up on all of them at mental_floss. Link

The Face of the Emperor

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 09:49 AM PST

Before the development of photography, and even for some time afterward, one of the customs right after the death of someone important was to cast a death mask, to ensure there was a lasting representation of what that person looked like. After all, statues would be commissioned someday! Napoleon Bonapart’s death mask was (and still is) particularly popular.

Following Napoleon's death, demand for his uncommonly life-like, and, dare we say, rather handsome, deathly visage was high. Reproductions of the cast made by his attending doctors were copied, and copied again. As a result, there are many questions about the authenticity of the masks, up to and including controversy over whether it is even the face of the emperor at all.Today Napoleon's death mask can bee seen in museums from North Carolina to Liverpool, Paris to Havana, Cuba.

Chicago’s Anti-Superstition Society Party

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 07:08 AM PST

Before you go worrying about Friday the 13th, see what a great excuse for a party it is! On December 13, 1940, Chicago’s Anti-Superstition Society held a Friday the 13th party at the Merchants & Manufacturers Club of Chicago. A good time was had by all. LIFE magazine was there, so there are plenty of great pictures of members breaking mirrors, spilling salt, and lighting three on a match. Link -via Metafilter
