Greetings!
Thank you for joining us for this issue of Operation PAL News. We wish a very happy
New Year to all of our wonderful supporters and are so grateful for your continued
involvement in this impactful program.
Your love, prayers, and good wishes got our wounded through another tough year of
hospital stays, surgeries, rehab and physical therapy. We like to think all of our
prayers and letters even contributed to a few miracles! We hope 2012 brings you
and your loved ones plenty of joy as you continue sending encouragement to our healing
heroes and their families.
To start the new year off we have a "feel good" story to share about our Lance Corporal
Jeff. Valentine's Day is quickly approaching, so start "thinking red" and fill some
envelopes with hearts and love. Our heroes will appreciate it very much.
Semper Family,
Barbara Gemmell

Participant Spotlight
Sgt. Brian, US Army
Brian with the "collar" he can't wait to have removed.
Brian was injured in Afghanistan by an explosion last August. He lost both legs
and suffered many other serious injuries along with a severe traumatic brain injury.
Brian's new wife, Jennifer, was told his recovery would be long, and how far he
would progress was unknown. He was unresponsive at first, but has slowly awakened.
Although memory is a major problem, Brian is communicating.
His many food allergies make it more of a challenge for Jenn as she cooks for him
and makes sure his nutrition is maintained.
Jennifer and Brian before his deployment.
Frustrations grow for Brian as he realizes how much more he has to do before he
can get out of the hospital, but experiences like his dogs visiting and the prospect
of an outing lifts his spirits.
They have suffered some disappointments, as well as had great progress. They appreciate
all the support you send as his recovery continues. To read more about Brian's journey,
visit his OperationPAL page. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=qovdcsbab&et=1109081262068&s=60280&e=001gfjCSv2bCBtwCk9udX3E0W2yh6RxdBw0BgWRdaBxZfQ6_kxPZxLrScaHECdvfgFiH6FQhpMmFdmKJu5QKB6adR2pNF2XxGN7CUni1q2sTVSkX_KEJXzKA8A6opN6Q8BiOe_LGBE3hG7ABwbhpB12Iw==]
NOTE: OperationPAL will arrange to send cards and letters to service members of
any branch who
have been severely wounded. If you know of a military family that would like to
receive such support, have them contact us: OpPAL@MarineParents.com [mailto:OpPAL@MarineParents.com]

Surprise Blessing...
Lance Cpl. Jeff, 3/5 Lima Co
Jeff's dog tags
Lance Corporal Jeff had to make the tough decision to have his lower leg amputated
after being wounded in Afghanistan in October 2010. He's been on our list since
his injury, and all seems to be going well after his surgery late last year. We
featured Jeff in our November 2011 issue showing a photo of his new foot. Our story
today is not about his recovery, but about the surprise he received so very long
after his injury.
When our heroes are severely wounded in combat, they are quickly evacuated. Many
times, as hard as the USMC tries, some items of clothing and personal belongings
cannot be retrieved. Jeff's mother, Kathy, tells us that when her son was injured
in the explosion in October of 2010, his dog tags were not recovered.
Toward the end of 2011, though, a woman whose son later served in the same area
of Afghanistan contacted her. The mother wrote "Last year when Stacy came home he
had someone else's dog tags in his bag. Recently, through the internet and a help
of a friend we were able to locate the Wounded Marine. Today we are mailing the
tags back to Lance Corporal Jeff, USMC, 3/5 Dark Horse. What a blessing to find
him alive. May God bless him for his service and sacrifice for the fight for freedom!"
Kathy is so grateful that this family was able to get Jeff's dog tags back to him.
"War stories" are so full of heart and carry such bonds that we get a lump in our
throats every time we hear one. Kathy gives us an example of an incredible story
that only "Connecting & Sharing" could make possible.

Where Are They Now?
Staff Sgt. K. Dylan
Dylan was on our list a few years ago. He originally responded "Do I want cards
and letters of support? That would be nice...but I'd be on a list of severely wounded
Marines? Oh ma'am I don't think I qualify for that, I only lost my feet." I will
never forget that comment. God bless him.
Dylan recovered quickly from losing his feet and was lucky enough to have people
in his community volunteer to build his growing family a home. He and Kelly now
have three children and their "new normal" is as comfortable as it can be in their
completed home. Ooh-Rah to Dylan and his beautiful family, and thanks to all who
helped make it happen!
