Learn About Windows 95 With The Cast Of Friends

Posted: 26 Feb 2012 04:25 AM PST

(YouTube Link)

Who would make the ideal hosts for a promotional video about Windows 95? Why, Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston, stars of the wildly popular TV show Friends, of course!

The casting choice seems a bit odd, but it makes sense in terms of the show’s popularity at the time. And, although it seems like a celebrity marketing scheme gone wrong, Windows 95 went large for Microsoft so maybe they were on to something with the Friends connection.

Extra Credit: See if you can sit through the entire ten minute video without wanting to gouge out your eyes and/or jam ballpoint pens into your ears!

The gadgets in this gallery were inspired by 80s tech, and they range from silly to seriously cool in both style and function. Even Superheroes Aren’t Recession Proof

Posted: 26 Feb 2012 03:29 AM PST

The sad truth discovered by most superfolks is that saving the world doesn’t exactly pay the bills, and you’re left looking far less than heroic when you lose your day job due to the recession or a twist of fate.

This photo series by Bechet Benjamin finds some spandex-clad superfolks and Disney characters at the lowest points in their lives, working hard for their money and loathing every minute of it, just like us regular folks.

That being said, I can’t help but wonder why Batman is pumping gas for a living? Isn’t Bruce Wayne a billionaire industrialist? Things must not be going very well at Wayne Enterprises, or else he’s just putting in work for his community service sentence.

If you’re ever entered into a contest to see who can eat the most calories in a 24 hour period, at least now you have a plan for breakfast. Of course, if you aren’t entered in said contest, you might want to stay away from the dish, which might be tasty, but also could be considered suicide on a plate.

The StumbleUpon for KickStarter

Posted: 26 Feb 2012 01:11 AM PST

KickStarter is a cool site, but with so many new projects being added all the time, it can be hard to find something you’re actually interested in. Fortunately, now there’s KickStumbler, which combines the functionality of StumbleUpon with the fundraising site, recommending new projects based on those you’ve already expressed interest in. Obviously, it won’t be too beneficial for everyone, but for those that get lost in the labyrinths of KickStarter, it’s a welcome innovation.

Scary Cool Female Skeletor Cosplay

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 11:28 PM PST

The classic 80s cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe features characters that are, shall we say, extremely physically fit, like bodybuilder fit, even the evil Skeletor was cut like a professional wrestler (except for the fact that he had no skin on his face).

Well, I have to admit that I like this female version of Skeletor way more than the original, if only for the fact that she looks like some sort of deranged cultist, with her face painted all scary green skull, which would make for a much more terrifying arch-nemesis in my opinion.

Anatomical Diagrams Of Japanese Monsters

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 11:06 PM PST

The nerdy medical-style illustrations in this gallery reveal what makes these Japanese Yokai (mythological monsters) and Daikaiju (movie monsters) tick.

From their grumbly tummies to their rather large bones, study them well because knowing your enemy inside and out can help even the odds if one of these hungry critters comes to your town looking for lunch.

Note: You may remember some of these cool illustrations first appeared on Neatorama back in 2009, when Miss C posted this article (link). She added an edit that the drawings are “from An Anatomical Guide to Monsters by Shoji Otomo with illustrations by Shogo Endo, from 1967″.

What’s cool about this new gallery link is that it features critters that weren’t in the original gallery, specifically Yokai monsters, so take a gander and get a new lesson in creature anatomy!

What Plushies Look Like Turned Inside Out

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 09:23 PM PST

Anyone who grew up with older siblings, especially older brothers, might already be familiar with the concept behind this series of photographs by Samuel Coendet and Lea Gerber of the design group Atelier Volvox-stuffed animals look weird, completely different, disturbing even, when they’re cut open and turned inside out.

I am an older brother, and I will admit to some Barbie decapitations and other doll oriented mishaps, but I never had the heart to cut open my kid sister’s beloved plushy pets. To her, these things were like a pet that didn’t make noise and needed very little care, and yet somehow she loved them like they were living creatures, at least until middle school.

I think that’s what intrigues me about this series, the fact that some people will have a visceral reaction to seeing plushies treated this way, coupled with the fact that it will evoke childhood memories from the same and others, makes this series a study in surreal nostalgia, which is how I felt when I was a kid. How about you?

70 Years Ago Today: The Battle of Los Angeles

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 07:25 PM PST

In the first few weeks after the formal entry of the United States into World War II, many Americans on the west coast feared Japanese air and sea attacks, or even an amphibious invasion. On February 23, 1942, a Japanese submarine briefly surfaced off Ellwood, California and shelled an oil refinery there. Two days later, radar spotted an unidentified flying object approaching Los Angeles:

The varying reports of the morning's events represent the mass confusion and paranoia of the time. Some reported there were just a few planes, while others claimed to have seen several dozen aircraft. There were even reports that planes were shot down, when in reality, nothing was hit by the AA guns—except three civilians killed and a few buildings damaged by friendly fire. Guns fired at the flying object for more than an hour between 3:15 and 4:15 a.m. on 25 February 1942.

To this day it is still uncertain what the flying object actually was, giving rise to many conspiracy theories of aliens, UFOs, and a subsequent government cover-up; but the most likely scenario is that the object was simply a rogue weather balloon.

Despite Economic Meltdown, The World is Actually Pretty Happy

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 03:46 PM PST

Economic doom and gloom notwithstanding, how happy are people around the world? Pretty happy, it turns out, according to a new global survey by private think tank Ipsos (whose motto "nobody's unpredictable" suggests that they've never met our intrepid adventurer-by-day/blogger-by-night John C. Farrier):

DESPITE global economic gloom, the world is a happier place than it was before the financial crisis began. That is the counterintuitive conclusion of a poll of 19,000 adults in 24 countries by Ipsos, a research company. Some 77% of respondents now describe themselves as happy, up three points on 2007, the last year before the crisis. Fully 22% (up from 20%) describe themselves as very happy—a more important measure, says Ipsos’s John Wright, since whenever three-quarters of people agree on anything, “you need to pay attention to intensity in the results.”

So, how about you? Are you happy?

Monkey Controls Hand with Brain Chips

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 12:43 PM PST

Image: China Daily

Hello, how do you do? Go ahead and shake hands with Jianhui the monkey, who controls a robotic hand through sensors implanted in its brain:

Zheng Xiaoxiang of the Brain-Computer Interface Research Team at Zhejiang University in Zijingang, China, and colleagues announced earlier this week that they had succeeded in capturing and deciphering the signals from the monkey's brain and interpreting them into the real-time robotic finger movements.

The two sensors implanted in Jianhui's brain monitor just 200 neurons in his motor cortex, Zheng says. However, this was enough to accurately interpret the monkey's movements and control the robotic hand.

More Space Balls!

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 10:42 AM PST

Yet another myterious space ball fell down from space, this time in Brazil:

Residents of the village of Riacho dos Pocos were the first to have seen the space ball. Jose Valdir Mendes said that he had heard the strong roaring sound on Wednesday morning, at about 06:00 local time. Several moments later, an explosion occurred near his home. The man got frightened and ordered his wife not to go out. However, the man was very curious to see what was happening outside, so he went out. He found the strange object in his garden, MR Noticias reports.

It appears that the ball is made of metal alloy. The object has a small opening in it. Inside, the ball is hollow, but there is something hidden inside the ball. The locals tried to lift the ball and shake it, and they could feel that there was something moving inside the object.

Yes, it looks just like a spacecraft propellant tank, but it's way more fun to call it "mysterious space ball": Link

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 06:43 AM PST

We’ve arrived at the last week of February, and I mistakenly thought that we’d gone through all the many holidays of the month, but no. Coming up Wednesday we have Leap Day, which takes on a holiday atmosphere just because the date is so rare. But first, the 84th Academy Awards ceremony is tomorrow night! Those who care about movies are waiting to see who will win the Oscars. Those who care about having a little fun this weekend are here at Neatorama! If you’re catching up on the past week, we’ll help you out with some links to our exclusive articles.

Eddie Deezen got ready for the Oscar presentations by looking at the awards’ history in 13 Women who Won an Academy Award by Playing a Hooker.

Jill Harness treated us to 20+ Pieces of Superhero Mashup Art.

For Presidents Day, we had Dysfunctional Erection: the Washington Monument, courtesy of Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader.

The Annals of Improbable Research gave us Synchronized Pipetting.

From mental_floss magazine, we had The Torn Identity: How an Earthquake Spawned One of the Greatest Immigration Fraud Schemes in History.

Over at the Neatorama Art Blog, we welcomed a new gallery this week from Philadelphia artist and illustrator Josean Rivera. Go check out his stuff!

In the What Is It? game this week, the objects are long-knives for use in cockfights; they were attached to the legs of battle cocks. Craig Clayton was the first with the correct answer, and wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! The prize for the funniest answer goes to Steve Pauk, who declared they are Edward Scissorhands' nail clippings!Find out what all this week's mystery items are at the What Is It? blog. And thanks for playing along!

The post that drew the most comments, besides the giveaway, was Should Affirmative Action Be Completely Banned? No surprise there! Tying for second place in the number of comments were Lucy Lawless Helps Hijack An Oil Drilling Ship For Greenpeace and Hotness. You are welcome to contribute to the conversations.

Here’s a usability tip in case you want to find related subjects at Neatorama. When you click on a post title, you go to that post’s individual page. Here, I went to the post Tabasco: Secret Sauce of Space Travel. At the end of the post, you’ll see this:

Now, you know that “Link” takes you to the original story, where you can read all the information. Then you have the social networking buttons you can click to tell your friends about this post. And under that are “tags”: astronaut, space, Tabasco, taste. You can click any of those words and get a list of Neatorama posts that are also tagged with those words. If you click “Tabasco,” you’ll get only two posts, including this one. I think we need to write more about the sauce. Or if you click “astronaut,” you’ll see quite a few Neatorama posts about astronauts. That’s an easy way to find more posts on something you’re interested in reading about.

Remember, you’ll find extra content and discussions at our Facebook page, and make sure you are following Neatorama on Twitter, too -and now Neatorama is available G+ goodness!
