Online Comic Series – Romantically Apocalyptic

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 04:45 AM PDT

If you like your comic strips darkly comedic with a dash of dystopia and a wickedly cool graphic style then you have to check out Alexiuss Vitaly’s online series Romantically Apocalyptic.

It chronicles Zee Captain and his Second In Command as they make their way across the post apocalyptic ruins of a massive cityscape, looking for love and inspiration as to just what they’re supposed to be doing.

So stay indoors this summer and let Zee Captain take your mind on a tour of humanity’s hilariously bleak future.  –thanks Travis!

Here’s A Funny GIF About Facebook Stock

As I mentioned above, here’s a GIF about Facebook stock prices plummeting, and the movie version of Zuckerberg isn’t taking the news very well.

It took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride and wasted ten valuable seconds of my life that I’ll probably miss when the Grim Reaper shows up pointing his bony finger at me. Yay for the goofy crap found on the interwebs!

The Ravens that Protect the Monarchy

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 03:43 AM PDT

Did you know the Tower of London is home to not only the Beef Eaters but also six ravens that are said to bring good luck to the monarchy? Well, technically there are seven right now, but that’s only because there are supposed to be six in place at all times so this way they have a spare. So what happens when the ravens are gone?

One of the most difficult times for the Monarchy was just after World War II. The raven population was down to just one — a raven named Grip. Most of the birds apparently flew the coop, it is believed, due to the disruption of the Blitz as the Germans bombed London relentlessly. It is rumored that one of the ravens was kidnapped. It seemed that perhaps the legend of the ravens could be true.

Sure it’s probably just coincidence, but when a good luck charm works out for around 700 years, you tend to not want to test how effective it is.

Disney’s upcoming animated feature is guaranteed to make hardcore gamers go squeee! with delight.

It’s an homage to old school, quarter plunking arcade gaming called Wreck-It Ralph, and it stars John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman and Jack McBrayer, to name a few stars from this amazing cast.

Fans of funny are sure to find a chuckle, and I’m sure it will inspire a new generation of classic video game enthusiasts to pick up their control pad and get those pixels moving!

Hand Drawn Scientific Illustrations By Peter Jellitsch

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 01:40 AM PDT

These scientific illustrations look like they were made by a machine, and in a way they are machine made. However, the machine in this case is an amazing  human artist by the name of Peter Jellitsch.

These hand drawn pieces reveal Peter’s mind at work, creating what he calls an “analog translation of digital data”, but I prefer to think of them as the blankets that science built.

The Donut Cops

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Photo: Shutterstock

A cop walks into a donut shop may sound like the start of a joke, but fighting counterfeit donuts is no laughing matter for Dunkin' Donut. When they suspect that a franchise store is selling fake donuts, they send in specially trained undercover agents:

"I used to be able to reach in and pull out a donut, and be able to smell and determine whether it was a Dunkin' Donut," Michael Mershimer, former head of loss prevention for Dunkin' Donuts and Quiznos, told ABCNews.com.

Dunkin' Donuts didn't just rely on Mershimer's nose. It has a lab in Canton, Mass., where Dunkin' investigates fraudulent pastries with the zeal of a forensics team. Donuts are weighed, measured, taken apart by experts in white lab coats. They are tasted, sniffed and mashed to see how they crumble.

Across America's thousands of franchise restaurants are more than 300,000 undercover food cops, pulling apart donuts, inspecting sub sandwiches, and checking burger patties for authenticity. The mystery shoppers are part of a loss prevention strategy that tries to ensure major brands - Quiznos, Baskin Robbins, Burger King - maintain consistency and don't lose money to crafty franchise owners.

Tube-Lipped Nectar Bat

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 04:30 PM PDT

[YouTube Clip]

Meet the Tube-lipped nectar bat. The cute little bat has the longest tongue relative to body size – if you had a tongue as long as this guy, your tongue would stick out 9 feet.

National Geographic’s Untamed Americas (which premieres this Sunday, June 10 at 9pm ET/PT on the National Geographic Channel) has the video clip:

To shoot the footage of the bat plunging its tongue into nectar, the Untamed Americas team cut a tiny hole into the base of a flower, installing a special slow-motion camera to slow down the action by 40 times.

And if you’re wondering where the bat keeps its tongue, you’d be surprised to know that the base of the tongue is in its rib cage. Thanks Kristin!

Science Explains Cockroaches’ Ninja-Like Ability to Vanish

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Now you see it, now you don't. In addition to their ability to survive a nuclear apocalypse, cockroaches have the ability to skitter and vanish in a blink of an eye.

Now, science has explained the ninja-like ability of cockroaches:

"Cockroaches continue to surprise us," said Robert Full, a professor of integrative biology who 15 years ago discovered that when cockroaches run rapidly, they rear up on their two hind legs like bipedal humans. "They have fast relay systems that allow them to dart away quickly in response to light or motion at speeds up to 50 body lengths per second, which is equivalent to a couple hundred miles per hour, if you scale up to the size of humans. This makes them incredibly good at escaping predators." [...]

Mongeau and Brian McRae, an undergraduate bioengineering major, analyzed the mechanics of the ninja-like maneuver and discovered that the cockroach, an American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), wasn't merely falling over the ledge. It actually ran at full speed toward the ledge, dove off, then grabbed the edge with its claws -- sometimes using only one leg -- and swung like a pendulum under the ledge, retaining 75 percent of its running energy.

The Guilt Center of the Brain

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Feel guilty? That's your frontolimbic network at work! That part of your brain is responsible for the "it's all my fault" feeling:

In the 22 individuals with no family or personal history of depression that made up the control group, statements designed to induce feelings of personal blame caused brain activation in a predictable network of brain regions working together: The regions that make up the frontolimbic network -- a set of primitive structures in the brain that help us process and respond to strong emotions -- worked hand-in-glove with a structure called the anterior temporal lobe.

Man Spent 11 Years Walking Around the World

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 01:30 PM PDT

When you and I got the itch to walk, we usually go around the block a couple of times. But not Canadian Jean Béliveau. He went walking for 46,600 miles through 64 countries.

And perhaps the biggest surprise of all is that his wife waited for him at home while Jean spent 11 years walking around the world.

Gadling interviewed the wandering man:

How much ground does one need to cover to walk around the world in 11 years?

Jean: I averaged about 20 miles per day over 11 years, but I didn't walk every day. It took about six months to cross the U.S., about 8 months for Mexico and Central America. Then I had to skip Colombia because back in 2002 it was considered very dangerous. I spent almost two years walking through South America and then I ran out of money. I didn't want to call Luce and ask for her to pay for my flight to Africa. Eventually, a Brazilian guy offered to pay for my ticket to South Africa and the trip continued.

Where did you sleep during this walk?

Jean: People invited me into their homes, they fed me, they phoned people 30-40 miles ahead to help me. Some people gave me money, brought me to the supermarket and filled my buggy with food. I stayed with about 1,600 families in 64 countries, but in general I'd say I spent roughly one-third with families, one-third camping and the rest being invited to sleep in churches, temples, mosques, schools and even prisons. I stayed with criminals, killers, extremists – all kinds of people.

The Start Up IPO That Can’t Fail

Forget Facebook. Forget Groupon. Forget everything you know about Silicon Valley. Because Ponzify isn’t like other tech companies. We don’t promise results. We show them to you, on a piece of paper, that has your name and a monetary figure that increases every month.

Our business model is simple: Attract users, advertisers, positive press and a corporate buyer; then, pull the cord on that golden parachute and have cable news book you as an expert on startups from time to time. There may be a book deal in there, too. We haven’t decided.

Users love our product because it’s something free. Venture Capitalists love it because they can imagine themselves talking about it at T.E.D. or on Charlie Rose. Trust us: Once you invest in Ponzify, you’ll have a difficult time investing your money anywhere else ever again.

AT&T Reaches Out And Transmits Data With Your Bone

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 12:30 PM PDT

This sure puts a new spin on AT&T's old slogan "reach out and touch someone":

AT&T Labs has been working on a bioacoustic system that could allow your cell phone or other device to securely transfer data through your body – in particular, through your bones. The system has the additional benefit of being completely secure – that is, if someone else has got your phone, they won’t be able to get to that data.

“Our ultimate goal is to get data transferred securely through the bones of people allowed access to it,” Brian Amento, the head of the project told me. “We’ve gained enough interest that its worth pursuing.”

Zildjian: Family Business for 14 Generations

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 11:30 AM PDT

When you talk about cymbals, chances are you're talking about Zildjian cymbals. But did you know that the company is four centuries old and still run as a family business?

Nearly 400 years ago, in 1623, Avedis Zildjian founded a cymbal-manufacturing company in Istanbul.

Now run by 14th generation family member Craigie Zildjian, along with her sister Debbie, the company has outlasted empires, survived a move overseas to the US, and thrived during the economic turmoil of the Great Depression and two World Wars.

Today, the company controls 65% of the world's cymbal market, and took in more than $50m in revenues last year.

But for the Zildjians, it's more than just a business.

Tough Mudder

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 11:00 AM PDT

[YouTube Clip]

Forget the touchy feeley corporate events to build team spirit and bond with your co-workers. Today's corporate warriors go to Tough Mudders:

"Half the challenge was not freezing to death," says the 27-year-old Mr. Komaiko, one of thousands of stoic people for whom your average marathon or triathlon isn't quite enough. [...]

Unlike marathons and triathlons run on roads and trails, obstacle races cover far shorter distances but ask participants to do far crazier things. Participants on a 10-to-12 mile Tough Mudder course wade through waist-deep mud, crawl under barbed wire, submerge themselves in ice water and jump through fire. At the "electroshock therapy" obstacle, they pass through a dangling curtain of electrical wires, some carrying "10,000 volts of electric shock," the company says. (The current, measured in amps, is low. It "feels like a major rubber band," a spokesman says.) Spartan Race's three-to-eight mile courses have featured abandoned mine tunnels, and a barrier of costumed "gladiators" just before the finish line.

The events and their aura of all-out toughness hold special appeal to people in competitive fields like financial services and sales. "You get to take a picture covered in mud with your T-shirt and you look like you've gone through the war," says Jim Thornton, president-elect of the National Athletic Trainers' Association. Bragging rights about signing the so-called death waiver are half the fun.

Cardboard Art of Nannies, Gardeners, and Housekeepers to the Rich and Famous

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 10:19 AM PDT

Photo: Genaro Molina/LA Times

Ramiro Gomez had to drop out of art school because he needed money and took a job as a male nanny to the rich and famous. While working in luxurious houses, Ramiro came to the realization that the nannies, gardeners, and housekeepers are practically invisible to the wealthy.

So, Ramiro made it his mission to turn the invisible visible:

Their faces are vague, the color of coffee beans, but before Ramiro Gomez heads out with pliers and wire to install them, he gives each one a name.

There was Guillermina, named for his Aunt Guille, a housekeeper at a casino hotel; Maria Elena, after his mom, a janitor at an elementary school; and Luis, like Uncle Luis, who delivers meat for a carniceria.

For the last eight months, Gomez, an artist from West Hollywood, has made the invisible visible by installing life-size cardboard cutouts of nannies, gardeners, valet workers and housekeepers in Beverly Hills, the Hollywood Hills and other wealthy areas.
