Charter moving headquarters to Stamford, Conn. Four months after announcing that it planned to open an office in the New York area to house its leadership team, Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) said it is moving its headquarters to Stamford, Conn. About 200 Charter employees are expected to join CEO Tom Rutledge in Stamford, which is located fewer than 10 miles from his home in New Canaan, Conn. It will be a much easier commute for Rutledge compared to his days at Cablevision (NYSE: CVC), when he would commute via helicopter across the Long Island Sound to Cablevision's headquarters in Bethpage, N.Y. Rutledge resigned from Cablevision last December. Several former Cablevision executives with homes in the New York area who have joined Rutledge at Charter will also work out of the Stamford headquarters, including COO John Bickham, Chief Marketing Officer Jonathan Hargis, EVP of customer operations Kathleen "Kip" Mayo and EVP of network operations Scott Weber. Stamford, which is about 40 miles northeast of New York, is home to one of the biggest cable programmers--Vince and Linda McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment. Time Warner Cable moved its headquarters from Stamford to New York in 2008, and Stamford was once home to Outdoor Life Network and Versus before it was acquired by Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and recently renamed NBC Sports Network. Connecticut is also home to ESPN, the most profitable cable network, which is headquartered in Bristol, about 70 miles north of Stamford. Charter is scheduled to announce the move to Stamford at a news conference Tuesday afternoon with Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy. The company's headquarters will be located in a 15-story building that is also occupied by UBS Financial Services and Harman International. Charter spokeswoman Anita Lamont said that most of the functions that are currently performed at its St. Louis corporate office will remain there, and that a "relatively small number of jobs" are leaving the St. Louis office. In August, the MSO disclosed that it gave CFO Christopher Winfrey a relocation package valued at $760,000 to move to the new headquarters. Wi-Fi networks provide a huge differentiation and opportunities for cable operators. This webinar will explore how MSOs are integrating Wi-Fi into their existing network architectures and examine the economics behind Wi-Fi for cable operators. Register Now! | 2. Time Warner Cable to charge subscribers $3.95 monthly to lease cable modems Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) said it plans to charge subscribers nationwide $3.95 monthly to lease cable modems. The nation's second largest cable MSO began charging new high-speed Internet subscribers the modem fees in January. By charging all 10.7 million of its high-speed Internet subscribers modem fees, it could generate more than $400 million in revenue. But Time Warner says it will allow subscribers to buy their own modems at retail outlets, which could allow some subscribers to avoid paying additional monthly fees. Time Warner Cable charges subscribers additional fees to lease Wi-Fi routers. Spokesman Justin Venech told FierceCable that the fees to lease home networking equipment vary by market. Like other cable MSOs, selling high-speed Internet access is one the biggest areas of revenue growth for Time Warner Cable. The MSO's high-speed Internet business generated $1.3 billion in revenue during the second quarter, which was an increase of 13.5 percent compared to the second quarter of 2011. Time Warner Cable is also beginning to test usage-based billing for broadband subscribers on its systems in southern Texas. Dolan, Sapan testify at opening of Voom trial Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) Chairman Chuck Dolan and AMC Networks (Nasdaq: AMCX) CEO Josh Sapan told jurors at the opening of their breach-of-contract trial against Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) Monday that the Voom HD channels would have become profitable if Dish hadn't terminated its deal to carry the networks in 2008. While Dish attorneys argued that Cablevision failed to follow through on a commitment to spend $100 million on original programming for the Voom channels, Dolan claimed Dish wanted to drop the channels because expanded basic cable programmers such as ESPN and Discovery Communications were beginning to offer distributors high-definition versions of more popular networks. "They could obtain HD from other sources without paying for it," Dolan said. Cablevision launched Voom HD as a dedicated high-definition subscription video programming service that was delivered via satellite in 2003. It pulled the plug on the Voom service in 2005, and struck a deal to license the networks it developed for the service to Dish. Former Cablevision subsidiary Rainbow Media, which is now known as AMC Networks, sued Dish in 2008. It is seeking $2.4 billion in damages. Time Warner Cable, AT&T demand 'parity' with Google Fiber TV in Kansas City Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and AT&T (NYSE: T) are reportedly demanding that the cities of Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., offer perks similar to those used to lure Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Google Fiber TV project to the area, such as free office space and free power. Google is also receiving discounted pole-attachment fees in Kansas City, Kan. The company is paying just $10 per pole per year to construct its fiber network, while Time Warner Cable pays fees of $18.95, according to the Wall Street Journal. "There are certain portions of the agreement between Google and Kansas City, Kan., that put them at a competitive advantage compared with not just us but also the other competitors in the field," Time Warner Cable spokesman Alex Dudley told the WSJ. Google recently began taking orders from subscribers in the Kansas City area for Google Fiber TV, which will offer wideband Internet access at speeds up to 1 gigabit per second, along with cable TV programming, a DVR with 2 terabytes of storage and a Nexus 7 tablet computer designed to be used as a remote control. Google will compete primarily with Time Warner Cable and AT&T's U-verse TV in the Kansas City area. Time Warner Cable CFO Irene Esteves said at an investor conference last month that the MSO passes 600,000 homes in the Kansas City area, but that it counts just 100,000 video and 100,000 high-speed Internet subscribers in the market.
