1. Cablevision deploys new Optimum Program Guide

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) began deploying its new cloud-based Optimum Program Guide to subscribers on New York's Long Island on Wednesday.

The Optimum Program Guide has an interactive interface.

The guide, which features an interface similar to those used for apps that Cablevision has developed for Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad and iPhone, allows users who press the info button on their remote controls while viewing a program to find additional episodes of the same series. Subscribers can also select "more like this" to receive recommendations for similar programs.

Cablevision, which developed the guide with Hicksville, N.Y.-based Zodiac Interactive, had been referring to the guide as the Onyx guide internally and on calls with investors. "The Onyx guide is a significant change in the customer experience. I would liken it to some of the Internet video providers that are out there like Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), but it's actually much superior to that," Cablevision CEO Jim Dolan said on the company's second-quarter earnings call in August.

Cablevision says the new guide allows subscribers to search for more than 30 days of TV listings data. Its previous guide allowed subscribers to browse just seven days of TV listings.

2. ACA rips MLB's $12.4B deal with ESPN, Turner and Fox

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Major League Baseball boasted that it will more than double its TV rights fees with eight-year contracts worth $12.4 billion with ESPN, TBS and Fox, sparking a backlash Tuesday from the American Cable Association.

"The plain truth is that these MLB deals will send monthly pay-TV bills streaking skyward. They will make life hard for families whose incomes, hammered by the recession, can't keep pace with the greed of broadcasters, cable networks and sports leagues," ACA President Matt Polka said in a statement.

MLB said in August that ESPN would pay it $5.6 billion to carry baseball games from 2014 to 2021. The league said Tuesday that Fox will pay it about $495 million annually under its eight-year deal, and that Turner will pay it about $325 million each year for its contract.

The Fox agreement gives the broadcaster rights to carry up to 40 games each year on a new national sports cable network that it is expected to launch next year. TBS has rights to create interactive television products such as companion apps for mobile phones and tablet computers that viewers can use while watching its regular and post-season games.

Top ESPN and Turner executives told attendees at The Cable Show in May that they expect sports rights fees to continue to escalate. "We will make a bet that the value of sports rights will continue to appreciate," ESPN President John Skipper said at the convention in Boston.

Polka, whose association lobbies Congress and the FCC for small and mid-sized cable operators, said the baseball contracts are hurting the industry. "[I]nsane sports contracts are destroying a business model that once balanced the interests of consumers, pay-TV operators, programmers and advertisers. If sports leagues, broadcasters, and programmers are unable to moderate themselves, then ACA will have no choice but to join with consumers to seek intervention in this increasingly broken marketplace," Polka said.

3. Microsoft adds ThinkAnalytics recommendation engine to Mediaroom IPTV partner program

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

ThinkAnalytics said Wednesday that Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has added its interactive program guide recommendation engine to its Mediaroom IPTV partner program.

The move could make it easier for Microsoft customers such as AT&T's (NYSE: T) U-verse TV to integrate the ThinkAnalytics recommendation engine with their program guides. ThinkAnalytics says it has deals with three major MSOs in North America to deploy the recommendation engine. Officials at ThinkAnalytics and AT&T wouldn't say if the recommendation engine, which suggests TV shows and movies to viewers based on their viewing habits, is being integrated with U-verse.

ThinkAnalytics noted that more than 40 pay-TV providers worldwide are using Microsoft's Mediaroom software, including Germany's Deutsche Telekom (XETRA: DTE.DE) and Canada's TELUS.

4. Time Warner Cable recruits former top Cablevision commercial sales exec Stephanie Anderson

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) said Tuesday that it named former Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) commercial sales executive Stephanie Anderson as senior VP of marketing for business services. The MSO also promoted Greg King to SVP of business services product and strategy.

Anderson, who had been VP of commercial markets marketing and advertising at Cablevision, will oversee marketing, sales and customer relationship management, Time Warner said. Before joining Cablevision in 2009, she held posts at call center software solutions provider Presence Technology, Avaya, Lucent Technologies and AT&T (NYSE: T).

King, who joined Time Warner in 2010 as group VP of business services strategy, will oversee product strategy, development and management for the MSO's business services unit. King was part of the team that helped Time Warner acquire NaviSite. The MSO said King and Anderson will both report to EVP of business services Gerry Campbell, and will be based in the company's New York headquarters.

Time Warner Cable reported that it generated $464 million in revenue from business services during the second quarter, which was an increase of 28.5 percent compared to the second quarter of 2011. Providing wireless backhaul services to mobile phone carriers is one the fastest growing parts of its business, with revenue from wholesale transport services jumping 44.8 percent in the last year. It also sells high-speed Internet, telephone and video services to commercial customers.

5. Netflix stock jumps nearly 8 percent on 'screaming buy' rating

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) stock jumped about 8 percent Wednesday after Citi Investment Research reiterated its buy rating on the stock.

"Netflix remains one of the most controversial stocks we cover," Citi analyst Mark Mahaney wrote in a research note. "It's our 'screaming' buy--we say 'buy,' people scream."

Netflix stock was trading at $60.95 at 1 p.m. ET, up $4.59, or 7.95 percent.

Netflix reported in July it picked up 530,000 U.S. streaming video subscribers. But the company warned that its subscriber growth during the third quarter could be impacted by coverage of the Summer Olympics in London.
