Better Keep That Cake Away From Nuclear Radiation Posted: 01 Dec 2012 04:00 AM PST No, that's not an incredibly lifelike zombie Magneto sculpture. It's actually an incredibly lifelike zombie Magneto cake. Better keep it away from radioactive sources though or it could become a real superhero cake. |

The Psychological History of a Typical Star Wars Fan, 1976 to the Present Posted: 30 Nov 2012 11:00 PM PST As the wise C-3PO once said, "I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit." In the long journey of the Star Wars fan, there are times for joy and times for sorrow. Julia Lepetit and Andrew Bridgman charted them in sequence. Read the rest at the link. |

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 09:00 PM PST In my experience, for serious ice cream eaters, there is only one flavor. Cookie dough. So when someone mentions a brownie cookie dough cupcake, I am all ears. Listen lady, I saw the picture. I am ready to be indulgent. Well look no further because I'm telling you this is the most indulgent cupcake I've ever eaten! Brownie + cookie dough. Tell me more about these brownie + cookie dough metrics.
You had me at cupcake. I have been diligent with my gym routine lately, but after this I will probably have to kick it up a few levels or risk adding a few notches to my belt leather. View the full recipe here. I plan on trying my hand at this over the weekend, would anyone like one? |

Like dreams and aspirations, tree houses were something I was obsessed with as a kid -always plotting and planning- only to neglect and diminish as I got older. Grown-ups can't live in tree houses, they have to pay mortgages and get jobs. Reminds me of a scene from Step Brothers (Warning NSFW Language); these people didn't lose their dinosaur- so to speak.

How Do Computers Understand Speech? Posted: 30 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PST Have you noticed that on many "reality" TV shows, the producers feel the need to add English subtitles over people who are speaking English? If it's so difficult for people to decipher speech, how in the world can we expect a computer to do it? The process of speech recognition involves seven very complicated steps, as explained at mental_floss. Link |
Beer-Battered Deep-Fried Bacon Posted: 30 Nov 2012 01:30 PM PST
I love bacon, not a huge fan of the deep fryer, but in this case I may make a rare exception. Deep-fried, beer-battered, bacon smothered bacon. Oh-my-lanta. As Anthony Bourdain might say- that is some serious food porn. Nick over at Dude Foods has deep fried everything from mashed potatoes to lasagna, from deviled eggs to White Castle sliders. It was finally time for him to deep fry the bacon. That is some serious dedication to deep frying, while his heart may be hating him I bet he has the happiest taste buds on the planet. As I was considering posting this, Alex shared a few choice words of encouragement "bacon is like internet Viagra" then walked off giggling. Well put Alex, well put. Link | Via Unique Daily |

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 01:00 PM PST The woman in the picture is as close to the real Maleficent as you can get- it's Eleanor Audley, the woman who provided the voice for both Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty and the evil Stepmother in Cinderella. She enjoyed dressing up in costume when not in the recording studio, and often acted out the roles so Disney animators could study her facial expressions and movements. Link --via Cyriaque Lamar |

Here I was all this time thinking Daleks don't celebrate Christmas. Apparently, not only do these cyborgs celebrate Christmas, but they do so with style. The only "exterminate" that will be going on here is when the tree catches on fire from kitty chewing on plastic light bulbs again. No holiday season is complete without Doctor Who references and the use of a fire extinguisher. Link | Via The Monica Bird |

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST Talk about a helicopter parent! Paul Wallich came up with an idea that would free him from escorting his young son 400 meters to the school bus stop every day, and still enable him to keep an eye on the child. He built a quadcopter to fly along with him! It has a redundant system, controlled by a GPS beacon emanating from the child's backpack, plus a remote control system for backup. An attached smartphone acts as both a camera and communication device. Read more about the technical aspects of this project at ieee spectrum. Link -via Gizmodo |

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 09:30 AM PST We all learned about DNA with graphic illustrations of a colorful double helix. Now we have an actual photograph, from an electron microscope, of a DNA strand. Enzo di Fabrizio and a team at the University of Genoa in Italy developed a technique to isolate and dehydrate a single strand of DNA, seen here stretched between two microscopic silicon pillars. Read about how they did it, and see a zoomed-in image at the Atlantic. Link |

America's Most Embarrassing Addresses Posted: 30 Nov 2012 08:30 AM PST Contractors who build subdivisions sometimes seem draw words out of thin air to name streets and cul-de-sacs. Still, you have to wonder who was responsible for thinking up the name of Broomrape Lane in Havasu City, Arizona. Four houses must use it for their address. That's just one of a list of ten embarrassing addresses, whether they are streets, buildings, or apartment complexes, at Curbed. Link -via Fark |
