Visit the "Prison Cafeteria" to Eat Just Like a Prisoner

Posted: 04 Jun 2013 04:00 AM PDT

prison cafeteria

There's a cafeteria at the Abashirishi Prison Museum in northern Japan. There you can eat just like a convict. Rocket News 24 sentenced a correspondent to visit and report back:

Perhaps Kuzo’s biggest apprehension was just how the food would taste. Being prison food, it’s hard not to hold the preconception of things being a little on the bland side. However, to his surprise, the meal was not wanting in flavor, with the sweetness of the Japanese radish complementing the rice and the aroma of the mackerel creating a taste-bud explosion. [...]

The mackerel on offer here is garnished with grated Japanese radish which complements the mackerel superbly. To make an already delicious meal even more tantalizing, sprinkling a little soy sauce on the fish and taking a mouthful along with the rice really does give the meal a sophisticated edge.

Things Your Dog Doesn't Want You To Know

Posted: 04 Jun 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Man's best friend has been - gasp - keeping secrets from us for centuries! These secrets would likely not see the light of day if it were not for 11 courageous canines that revealed them to the world in this tell-all book Things Your Dog Doesn't Want You to Know by Hy Conrad and Jeff Johnson, with art directions by Dean Stefanides.

If you ever wondered why dogs still eat the furniture when there are plenty of chew toys nearby, why they dash to a rug when they have to throw up, or what they really think of the name you gave them, this book is the answer.

A few examples:

Dear Human:

Your dog probably puzzles you. Most of us do that. And most of us would like to keep things as they are: humans in the dark, dogs with the upper hand.

But we dogs are about to let you in a little secret.  Okay, a lot of secrets.

  • We graduated first in our obedience class three times. This should tell you something.
  • Puppies know that they're being cute. They're using you.
  • We don't sound anything like those silly voices you use to imitate us.
  • We hate those ridiculous names you give some of us. Moonbeam is not a dignified name for a mutt.
  • You might want to check your herb garden for fertilizer.
  • We are only wearing this stupid birthday hat so we can get some cake. No self-respecting dog cares about his birthday.
  • We are not spoiled, certainly not in comparison to teenage girls.
  • We are in charge of the house. We let you pretend that you are.
  • We'd be lost without you. We love you.

It's all in our new book, Things Your Dog Doesn't Want You To Know, as told to humans Hy Conrad and Jeff Johnson. Even Steve Martin (yes, THAT Steve Martin) raves about us!  Inside you'll find revelations such as the reason we at the sofa (leather tastes very similar to rawhide), and what we really think of the costumes you dress us up in.

I'm not alone. Ten other courageous canines have stepped forward to tell you what your dog won't – every last dirty, hairy bit of it.   If you have dogs, love dogs, or have ever been baffled by a dog, this book is a must-have.

The German Language Drops Its Longest Word: Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz

Posted: 04 Jun 2013 02:00 AM PDT

beef

Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz means "law for the delegation of monitoring beef labelling." This 63-letter word is no longer a part of the German language:

Professor Anatol Stefanowitsch, a linguistics expert at the Free University of Berlin, told the German news agency dpa that the beef labelling law was the longest "authentic" word in the German language.

The law was considered a legitimate word by linguists because it appears in official texts, but it never actually appeared in the dictionaries, because compilers of the standard German dictionary Duden judge words for inclusion based on their frequency of use.

At the link, you can listen to an audio recording of someone saying the word.

Pair of Melons Sells for $17,500 in Japan

Posted: 04 Jun 2013 01:00 AM PDT

melon

A lovely pair of melons was auctioned off last Friday in Japan. They're Yubari melons, which are considered to be the finest available in that country:

In a country where a single apple can cost more than $5 and a presentation pack of 20 cherries sells for over $100, Japanese shoppers are used to paying high prices for their fruit.

But the eye-watering figures paid at the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market in northern Hokkaido reflect buyers' desire for prestige.

Yubari melons are considered a status symbol in Japan like a fine wine, with many buyers presenting them as a gift to friends and colleagues.

The A.C.Camargo Cancer Center in São Paul, Brazil wanted to make the brutal experience of chemotherapy easier on children. The ad agency JWT responded by designing IV bag cases labeled with the logos of four DC superheroes.

But that's not all. It also created comic books showing the four heroes getting ill and needing treatment from these cases in order to regain their health and superpowers.

At the link, you can watch a video showing the cancer center using these superheroic tools to encourage young cancer patients.

Taco Bell sells tacos made with Doritos flavors. Unlike my healthy veganish smoothie version, this variation by Nick of DudeFoods may be just a bit fattening. He removed the contents of one such taco, dipped it in beer batter, applied bacon and deep fried it.

Nanotrap for Bed Bugs

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 09:00 PM PDT

If you've got bed bugs, nanotechnology may be able to help. Researchers at Stony Brook University in New York have developed Fibertrap, a nano-trap made from microfibers 50 times thinner than human hair that can entangle bed bugs and other insects.

“Our nanotechnology produces entanglements that are millions of times more dense than woven products such as fabrics or carpets,” said lead researcher Miriam Rafailovich, Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Co-Director in the Program of Chemical and Molecular Engineering at Stony Brook University. “The microfibers trap them by attaching to microstructures on their legs taking away their ability to move, which stops them from feeding and reproducing.” [...]

The microfibers are safe for humans and pets and unlike chemical treatments the insects cannot develop a resistance to it.

UFO Imitates Star Trek Into Darkness

Ants Ring Woman's Doorbell

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 05:00 PM PDT

Who's been ringing a 75-year-old woman's doorbell in the middle of the night? Here's the strangest story of ding dong ditch you'll read today:

An elderly woman in Germany who heard her doorbell rung repeatedly late at night naturally called the cops. Although it seemed like the work of a prankster, officers uncovered a much smaller culprit: ants.

Police in Offenburg responded when the 75-year-old woman made a desperate call at 3 a.m. on Wednesday, the German news magazine Focus reported. But when they arrived, officers didn't find anyone at the door. On closer inspection they found that ants had built such a large nest that it was pressing the doorbell components together to make it ring.

Do You Know Your State Amphibian?

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 12:00 PM PDT

I never knew there was such a thing as a state amphibian, but now that I know, I can't help but be disappointed that California does not have one. More than 15 states have a state amphibian, though some share one with other states. Personally, I think we need a national amphibian and each state needs to have their own -that way, a total of 51 amphibians could be honored by US governments.

Ravioli Pizza Can Up Your Carb Levels Quick

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 10:00 AM PDT

I've seen ricotta on pizza before, but it just looks so sloppy sitting there all alone. That's why Little Vincent's is so smart -they opted to seal all that messy ricotta in ravioli before covering it in mozzarella. It's so much more organized when the ricotta is separated in their own protective pockets.
