Sprint, SoftBank partner with Sharp for low-cost phones, starting with Sharp Aquos Crystal Sprint (NYSE: S) and its parent SoftBank are partnering with Japanese display and handset maker Sharp to deliver low-cost smartphones in Japan and the U.S. The first device in their partnership is called the Sharp Aquos Crystal, and SoftBank indicated that its scale will enable it to sell the phone at a low cost. According to the Wall Street Journal, SoftBank is also discussing a new service that allows unlimited downloads from a selection of apps for a fixed monthly fee. Meanwhile, reports have indicated Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure will unveil "very disruptive" new pricing plans later this week. The 5-inch Aquos Crystal will be released in Japan Aug. 29 and then later in the U.S. Sharp also announced the 5.5-inch Aquos Crystal X, which will be released in Japan in December. For Sharp, the partnership is a boon since its smartphone business has struggled mightily in recent years. The Aquos Crystal runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat, has an edge-to-edge display, 1.2 GHz Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) Snapdragon 400 processor, 8 GB of internal storage and Harman-Kardon audio. The edgeless display of the design is notable because Sprint is holding a media event in New York City tomorrow in which it has invited attendees to "take the edge off," indicating the carrier could use the event to announce the U.S. version of the phone. Meanwhile, the Journal reported that Sony has approached Sprint about selling its Xperia-branded smartphones in the U.S. Last month Sony cut its annual smartphones sales target to 43 million units from the 50 million it had announced in May. Sony declined to comment on its talks with Sprint, the Journal said. "We had received a number of offers from different vendors," Yoshiaki Adachi, a SoftBank manager in charge of product design, told the Journal, adding that SoftBank could enter into similar partnerships with other device vendors in the future. "That we would be able to make this offering exclusive was a large draw." Verizon undercuts AT&T with $60 plan for unlimited talk, text and 2 GB for individuals Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) launched a new plan for individual subscribers that offers unlimited voice, texting and 2 GB of data for $60 per month. The new plan is $30 per month cheaper than a comparable offering on Verizon's More Everything shared data plans. The new pricing went into effect over the weekend. The $60 plan drops down to $50 per month when customers choose Verizon's Edge handset upgrade program, in which customers pay off their phones in monthly installments and get to upgrade early. Data overage charges are $15 per GB. "We always want to put offers in the market we believe our customers will like, and this single line plan is no different," Verizon spokeswoman Debi Lewis told FierceWireless. Under Verizon's More Everything plans, customers pay a $40 per month smartphone access charge and then $50 for unlimited voice, texting and 2 GB of data, bringing the total cost to $90. The carrier's More Everything plans also include features like international messaging and 25 GB of cloud storage that the $60 individual plan does not. Verizon's move essentially makes its previous "loyalty" plan available to all subscribers. Prior to the company's announcement today, Verizon had offered unlimited talking and texting and 2 GB of data for $60 as a loyalty plan to customers in good standing in an attempt to ensure they remained with the carrier. Verizon previously offered the plan to specific customers, especially those disgruntled with their service or who told Verizon they were thinking of dropping their service. Verizon only offered the plan to customers who had a long-term relationship with the carrier, had not missed payments and who agreed to some kind of service contract extension. Verizon's offer undercuts AT&T Mobility's (NYSE: T) prices for similar service. For individual customers, AT&T offers a plan for $65 per month with unlimited voice, texting and 2 GB of data. However, that plan requires customers to finance their device through AT&T's Next handset upgrade plan, bring their own phone or buy their phone at full cost. Under Sprint's (NYSE: S) Framily plan, individual customers can get unlimited voice, texting and 1 GB of data for $55 per month, though customers' costs go down as more members are added to the Framily circle. Customers can also get 3 GB of data for $10 more per line. T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) offers its base Simple Choice plan with unlimited voice, texting and 1 GB of LTE data before throttling for $50 per month. The carrier's $60 per month plan offers unlimited voice, texting and 3 GB of LTE data before throttling. Those prices do not include the cost of a phone. T-Mobile's family plans now support up to 10 lines T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) changed its family plans over the weekend to add support for up to 10 lines. The carrier initially launched its family plan in July with four lines of service for $100 per month. Under T-Mobile's expanded family plan offer, the first line costs $50 per month, the second line costs $30, lines 3-6 cost $10 each and lines 7-10 cost $20 each. That pricing structure is somewhat similar to Sprint's (NYSE: S) Framily plans, which lower the cost per line as more customers are added to the Framily circle. Each member of T-Mobile's family calling plan gets unlimited voice, texting and 2.5 GB of LTE data before throttling through the end of 2015. After that, the data allotments per line will drop down to 1 GB per line before throttling. Further, the offer for that pricing is only valid if customers sign up before Sept. 30. T-Mobile's pricing does not include the cost of a device. Although it's generally less expensive, T-Mobile's new family plan pricing is not directly comparable to what other carriers offer due to the differences in the structure of T-Mobile's service. For example, the T-Mobile plan offers a total of 15 GB of data across six lines, but the data is not shareable. AT&T Mobility (NYSE: T) offers 15 GB of shareable data for six lines under its Mobile Share Value plans for $130 per month. However, six customers' smartphone access charges--if they signed up through AT&T's Next handset upgrade plan or brought their own device--would add $90 to the cost, bringing it up to $220. Customers would then also have to pay off the cost of their phones in monthly installments. Verizon Wireless' (NYSE: VZ) More Everything plan for 14 GB of shareable data with unlimited voice and text costs $120 (the 16 GB plan costs $10 more). Then, if six customers added smartphones and signed up via Verizon's Edge handset upgrade program, that would add $90 to the cost per month, bringing the total cost under the 14 GB plan to $210 (and $220 for the 16 GB plan). Customers would then also have to pay off the cost of their phones in monthly installments. Under Sprint's Framily plan, six customers could sign up and get unlimited voice, texting and 1 GB of data per month for a total cost of $180 per month. Customers can get 3 GB of data for an additional $10 per line. Motorola's Moto 360 smart watch tipped to cost $250 Motorola Mobility's Moto 360 smart watch will cost $250 at retail, according to a leaked product page that appeared on the website of retailer Best Buy. The page has since been taken down. | Moto 360 | Motorola is reportedly expected to formally announce the Moto 360's availability at a media event on Sept. 4. The $250 price point would make the Moto 360 more expensive than the first two smart watches running Android Wear software, the LG Electronics G Watch and the Samsung Electronics Gear Live, which cost $229 and $200, respectively. However, as The Verge notes, the Moto 360's circular face and stylish design could make it more appealing than the other two devices. The Moto 360 is going to be one of the premier products of the second half of 2014 for Motorola, the Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) unit that Lenovo is in the process of acquiring for $2.91 billion. According to Droid Life, which copied the details from the product page before it was taken down, the Moto 360 will sport a 1.5-inch backlit LCD touch screen, with a 320x290 resolution and Corning's Gorilla Glass 3. The device will also have 512 MB of RAM, Bluetooth connectivity and a Texas Instruments processor inside. In terms of features, the gadget is expected to include voice activation, a built-in optical heart rate monitor and pedometer and will be waterproof in 3.3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. AT&T Stadium's DAS, Wi-Fi upgrades drive immersive fan experience AT&T (NYSE: T) has made AT&T Stadium, home of Dallas Cowboys football, a showcase for its wireless services, with an extensive Wi-Fi network, enough cellular-network capacity to serve a small suburb and the first stadium LED display built to respond directly to fans. In preparation for the 2014-2015 NFL season, AT&T increased cellular-network capacity at the stadium more than 50 percent over what was available a year ago, when the operator snagged naming rights for the venue. "At AT&T Stadium, we've got you covered with a Wi-Fi network of more than 1,500 access points and a more than 1,300-antenna Distributed Antenna System (DAS). Translated, that means the stadium has enough cellular muscle to service a small suburb the size of McKinney, Texas," wrote John Donovan, senior executive vice president of technology and network operations at AT&T Services, along with John Winborn, the Dallas Cowboys' CIO, in a jointly authored post on the AT&T Innovation Space Blog. "We've invested millions to make sure the fan experience is the best we can possibly make it," Scott Mair, AT&T's senior vice president for network planning and engineering, told the Star-Telegram. He noted that the stadium now has the equivalent capacity of 17 macro cell sites. The operator and the football team also worked with Obscura Digital to create a new 130-foot LED display made of 40 independent, robotic, mirrored, louvered panels that can each rotate 360 degrees. Starting with the Sept. 7 season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, fans using the new AT&T Stadium app on their Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iOS or Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android devices will be able to interact with the display via a feature dubbed "Unite this House." The app is free, and users do not need to be AT&T customers to use it. At certain times during a game, Cowboys fans will be prompted by the display and a push notification from the app to opt in. Those who participate might see their profile photos appear on the louvered display and other video boards within the stadium. In addition, their devices will light up with a strobe display they can flash in unison with other fans. The app will also enable fans to post selfies and other pictures to the AT&T fan-experience board, answer trivia questions and participate in polls. AT&T has been focusing on increasing capacity and coverage through Project Velocity IP (VIP), the three-year IP broadband investment plan announced in November 2012. As part of Project VIP, the carrier pledged to add more than 1,000 distributed anntenna systems nationwide by the end of 2015. It is also deploying 10,000 macro cell sites and more than 40,000 small cells under the program.
