Return of the "Misery Index"?

David Fessler
Some of us may recall "the Misery Index" from the mid-1970s...

It's a term used to describe the combination of the inflation rate and the unemployment rate.

If you lived through that period, I doubt you could forget it...

Just take a look at this chart of what happened after Nixon weakened the dollar in 1972.

With inflation going through the roof, by 1974, Gerald Ford took office with an index of almost 18%.

Yet with an ever-weakening dollar, the worst was yet to come.

After taking office in 1976, Jimmy Carter saw "the Misery Index" skyrocket to over 20%.

By 1980, the joke was that if you saw a dollar lying on the ground, you might pick it up... just to see if there was anything of value underneath.

But what does this mean for you today?

America went through eight miserable years of economic hardship the last time inflation went through the roof.

And as strong as the dollar may be right now, my colleague Sean Brodrick has a very uneasy feeling about certain global events heating up right now.

Sean is The Oxford Club's Resource Strategist, and he's one of the smartest guys I know. When he talks, I have found it pays to listen closely.

He's prepared a report with a warning we all should heed...

Just when we may think we need it the least.

Sincerely,

Dave

P.S. If you hold stocks, bonds or even Treasurys now... you're going to want to prepare yourself for what could come from this situation.
