Devil In the Details

"Deals"
November 30, 2016
Devil In the Details
President-Elect Donald Trump hasn't wasted any time touting a "deal" with the manufacturer Carrier, which had previously announced a plan to shift 2,000 factory jobs at its Indianapolis plant to Mexico. Trump's deal will allegedly keep "close to 1,000 jobs" in Indianapolis. The media is calling this an early "victory" for Trump and on Thursday he'll head to Indianapolis to celebrate the deal with Vice-President-Elect and current Indiana Governor Mike Pence.
So what's the catch? As with everything else, the devil is most definitely in the details. Before this can really be claimed a win for team Trump, we need answers to three key questions:
    1. How long are these jobs staying in Indianapolis?
    2. How much are Indiana taxpayers shelling out to keep these jobs?
    3. How many jobs are going abroad?
It hasn't been hard to find evidence that Trump isn't actually looking out for the workers he claims gave him the big W in November. So before anyone breaks out the bubbly, let's figure out what was actually promised and whether or not this is more than just a distraction from Trump's still-forming team of Wall Street and DC creatures. For the full story on what we should be asking Trump read this.
TRANSITION TRACKER
Wilbur Ross. Wilbur Ross Jr., a billionaire investor, is the Trump team's pick for secretary of commerce. Ross has a net-worth of $2.9 billion, making him the 232nd richest person in the US. He has grown rich by acquiring struggling companies—often manufacturing companies—and restructuring them, often by cutting budgets, wages, and even jobs. He also opposes regulations for businesses, even though, at his mine, 12 miners lost their lives after his company ignored repeated federal safety citations. So much for Trump's promise that "Under a Trump presidency, the American worker will finally have a president who will protect them and fight for them." Read more about Ross on our Transition Tracker.
Steve Mnuchin. Mnuchin was one of Trump's All-White, All-Male, All-Steve team of economic advisers announced in August and now he is Trump's nominee for Secretary of Treasury. The Wall Street financier turned hedge fund manager made billions in profits on the backs of taxpayers by churning out discriminatory foreclosures and will now be positioned to personally benefit from the very deregulatory and tax giveaway plans he will put forward. Mnuchin doesn't instill a lot of confidence in Trump's promise to "drain the swamp" and to go hard on Wall Street. In fact, he gets a four out of five on our Swamp-O-Meter.

WHAT'S TRENDING
Doing the least. That's what President-elect Trump promised to do when he announced this morning (via Twitter) that he will be leaving his "great business in total in order to fully focus on running the country in order to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" He also claimed, falsely, that he isn't mandated to do so but that it's "visually important." But as long as he knows he is earning income from his business, he has a serious conflict of interest. And a blind trust run by his children, which he suggested he would create earlier, isn't a blind trust at all.
Outlook hazy. That's what almost anyone living in the South is saying these days. More than 30 large wildfires have burned more than 80,000 acres in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky. In Tennessee, at least three people have been killed and more than 14,000 people have been evacuated in Gatlinburg, TN near the Great Smoky Mountains. These fires have been fueled by extreme droughts in the areas. Consider this a reminder that climate change drives up the dangers and costs of wildfires.
Standing Rock. Government officials are still planning to evict the water protectors protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. And now, law enforcement is blocking supplies from reaching the protestors. Despite this, the Standing Rock tribe and other protesters are planning on sticking it out to prevent a pipeline that would harm sacred sites and possibly endanger the water for millions of Americans.

GOOD NEWS
Cookies for breakfast. Emma Morano, the world's oldest person, celebrated her 117th birthday yesterday. She is the only living person born in the 1800s. Her secret to a long life? Cookies. And eggs.
Win for workers. You can now shop at Marshalls and TJ-Maxx with a little more gusto because the TJX company still plans on implementing the new overtime rule for its workers—despite a recent court injunction temporarily halting the new overtime rule.
