Insiders at a majority of S&P 500 companies didn't purchase any of their firm's shares in the open market this year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That's a far cry from the $26.6 million Jamie Dimon shelled out for JPMorgan Chase equity.

Putin rejected a tit-for-tat expulsion of diplomats, as he awaits better ties with President-elect Trump. The Russian government accused the outgoing U.S. administration, which ejected 35 Russians diplomats, of spending its last weeks in power trying to sabotage Trump's promised outreach to the Kremlin.

The new year is about to arrive with a frigid bang. A deep freeze is about to descend on North America, Europe, and Asia thanks to record high temperatures across the Arctic. Bundle up!

The year's best stock rally was really just an illusion. Data showing the Caracas Stock Exchange posted the world's biggest advance in 2016 isn't to be trusted. That 114 percent rally is a fiction. The collapse of the bolivar boosted the stock index.

Reviewing the year in technology–in charts. Some highlights: Tech companies at times held each of the top five spots of the world's most valuable public companies; advertising became a two-horse race between Facebook and Alphabet's Google; and China tech flexed its muscles.

The Trump era is marking a new age for gold as an investor safe haven. A bevy of political and economic surprises in 2016 sparked a surge in buying that sent bullion to the first annual gain in four years. Prices may rally 12 percent in 2017, according to a Bloomberg survey of 26 analysts.
