Dallas Observer

Over the past week as I've seen thousands of people marching through the streets of Dallas and the many other markets served by our company, from Houston to Los Angeles, Denver to Phoenix, Miami to Las Vegas, I've experienced all the emotions you might imagine. Anger. Uncertainty. Compassion. Fear. Anger. More Anger.

Right now I'm thinking about my children, two white and born in the U.S. and one black and born in Ethiopia. I'm thinking about what kind of city they'll live in and what kind of country they'll inherit. I am having very hard conversations with them about police brutality and violence against people of color. I am listening to them. I am watching them suffer through all of this and try to find their way through it by somehow making sense of it all. I am thinking about their friends, black and white and every color in between, and how frightened they all sound as they contemplate the future.

I have no easy answers, no pat slogans. But I know this must end. There must be justice for all. There must be freedom for all. There must be a future for all. We cannot stand idle and allow people of color in our cities to be beaten, violated and killed over the color of their skin. We cannot stay silent when black teenagers are afraid to walk down a city street in broad daylight. They should not have to have their head on a swivel, living in fear every single day of their lives. We cannot stand silent as time after time officers of the law are treated as though they're above the law. We cannot stay silent as the civil rights of all citizens are rendered meaningless by people, some with badges and some without, who have sworn to serve and protect us -- or to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

For more than three decades, the Dallas Observer has been at the heart of this city's most important issues, sharing stories that give voice to the voiceless, fighting good fights, and, when necessary, shedding light on our city's darkest moments.

Just as we were just starting to see the city take its first steps in recovering from COVID-19, George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis. That and the memory of so many other injustices cast a dangerous cloud over the city and the country we love. It inspired anger and fear. It set many of our partners back on their road to economic recovery.

But we are still here to hold our leaders accountable, to offer help to worthy community organizations and institutions, and to support the dreams and aspirations of our readers and the hard-working local merchants with whom we've developed longstanding relationships.

We must come together and make a stand for people of all colors. We must put an end to police violence and racism. We must organize and activate. We must unite and use our voices and our votes.

We can, and will, come out of this...and the Dallas Observer, as always, will be out there swinging.

Decades ago, people imagined a great city here. But it can only be great if it is great for everyone.
