ICYMI: My speech on the Democrats’ post office conspiracy theory

Dear Friends,

On Saturday, Speaker Pelosi called the House of Representatives back into session for an emergency vote on a $25 billion bailout of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). Democrats claim the funding is needed to prevent President Trump from sabotaging the post office to steal the 2020 presidential election.

This baseless conspiracy theory obscures the Trump administration’s efforts to restore the USPS to fiscal solvency. Here are the facts:

  • The USPS currently has $14 billion in cash on hand and another $10 billion in borrowing authority appropriated to it by Congress in the CARES Act.
  • The USPS has chronic financial problems, operating at an $8.8 billion loss in fiscal year 2019. The Trump administration has attempted to reform the USPS by implementing pilot programs to cut needless costs, such as the Expedited to Street/Afternoon Sortation program, and retiring some collection boxes and sorting machines, which are costly to maintain.
  • Removing underused collection boxes and sorting machines helps to increase efficiency and has been commonplace since the 2000s.
  • In fiscal year 2019, the USPS delivered 471 million pieces of mail daily, proving its ability to deliver high volumes of mail.

During debate in the House of Representatives on Saturday, I made some observations about the Democrats’ post office conspiracy theory. To watch my speech, click here.

Sincerely,

Devin Nunes
Member of Congress
