A Message from Ann

A message from Congresswoman Ann Wagner

Dear ,

I joined a group of my colleagues to visit the Ukrainian border to see just how bad the situation is on the ground. I met with government officials to provide Congressional oversight of our support mission to our NATO partner and ensure brave Ukrainians are getting the resources they need to repel the Russians. It was heartbreaking to see some of the human impact Vladimir Putin’s actions have had on children and families fleeing the war in Ukraine. My visits with Ukrainian refugees have given me even more resolve to punish the dictatorial Putin regime and find an end to this war.

We have to be absolutely clear on this situation: Vladimir Putin and his cronies have breached the territorial sovereignty of Ukraine and declared war on an innocent people. These grievous violations will not stand, and Russian government officials must be completely and utterly isolated from the world stage during this unjust and unprovoked war. Last week I introduced the Isolate Russian Governmental Officials Act which will ensure Russian officials are excluded from major financial and intergovernmental forums and further restrict Russia’s inclusion in international meetings.

I met with Ukrainian Member of Parliament Oleksandra Ustinova and discussed the critical need to make sanctions on Russia and Russian Oligarchs much more comprehensive. Crippling sanctions are necessary to impose severe pain on the Putin regime and its supporters as they carry out a brutal war on innocent Ukrainian citizens. My heart breaks for the Ukrainian people as they defend their nation, and I am praying for their safety and for their victory in the face of unprovoked Russian aggression.

Last week I spoke at the House Financial Services Committee hearing about the state of our economy and had the opportunity to ask Chair Powell about the role the federal reserve has played in issuing sanctions on Russia and how they are implemented. I also asked Chair Powell how the war will impact the Federal Reserve’s plans to raise interest rates. Watch my remarks here.

I led a bipartisan letter urging President Biden to work with allies and partners around the world to bar Russia from international sport and cultural events. Russia must be isolated from the international world across the board and part of that isolation should be the complete exclusion of the Russian Federation from international sporting events. Vladimir Putin attempts to use the prestige and economic benefits associated with international sporting and cultural events to his regime’s advantage, something for which the world will not stand, especially in light of his most recent crimes against humanity in Ukraine. Read the full letter here.

I spoke at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing about the incredible strength of the Ukrainian people throughout Putin’s unprovoked attack. Let me be clear, Putin’s violence does not end with Ukraine. This is a threat to every member of the free world and we will work with our allies to support the Ukrainian people.

My colleagues and I also introduced the American Energy Independence from Russia Act, legislation that will help our nation counter Russia’s energy imports and diminish its influence abroad. It is vital now more than ever that the United States be energy independent.

Sincerely,

Ann Wagner
Member of Congress
