| | 🗣️ Fallout continues after officials in Memphis, Tennessee released dramatic body camera footage Friday of the fatal confrontation between Tyre Nichols and five police officers. Nichols, who died three days after the violent confrontation, can be heard screaming "mom" several times during the gut-wrenching footage. The five officers involved were fired and then charged with second-degree murder while investigations continue into Nichols' death.
🚔 The Memphis Police Department announced Saturday that it deactivated its SCORPION unit, the task force at the center of Tyre Nichols' death. The former 40-officer SCORPION unit stood for Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods and focused on "high crime hotspots," said the department. The Nichols family and their attorneys said they found the disbandment of the unit "to be both appropriate and proportional to the tragic death of Tyre Nichols, and also a decent and just decision for all citizens of Memphis."
🚨 Six mass shootings have rocked the state of California in just a little under two weeks. The latest was Saturday in an upscale Beverly Hills neighborhood that left at least three people dead, and four others injured during a mass-casualty shooting in a short-term rental luxury home, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. No arrests were immediately announced.
☑️ Former President Donald Trump made his campaign debut for his 2024 run on Saturday in New Hampshire and South Carolina, two key early-voting states. Trump teased a ramp-up in upcoming campaign events, and laid out his agenda focused on crime, immigration and education. He also spent time criticizing the investigation into classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
🔑 Health providers from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, who cared for Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin after he collapsed from cardiac arrest earlier this month, were honored with the key to the city. After Hamlin's discharge, the Buffalo Bills lost to the Bengals, ending their season. After Sunday's NFC and AFC championship games, the Philadelphia Eagles will face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. on Feb. 12.
