Kate Forbes is running for the SNP leadership

Kate Forbes cannot be ruled out as the next leader of the Scottish National Party and first minister of Scotland. She lost to Humza Yousaf last time round by 52-48 per cent, and if the contest had gone on for a few more days, when Peter Murrell, Nicola Sturgeon's husband was first arrested, she might have won. She said today: "Nobody's declared yet, so I think we do still have a bit of time. I think for me it's clear I have a groundswell of support amongst the party. That was clear from the last contest and clearly we need to weigh up what is in the best interests of the party, the country and my family." I think that means she will run. John Swinney, the favourite to succeed Yousaf, is the "safe" option, for which party members might read "boring". If Forbes can persuade the members that she can work with the Greens, the contest could be wide open. |

Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer will doubtless have Thursday's local elections on their minds at Prime Minister's Questions at noon. (I will be surprised if Sunak doesn't mention Birmingham City Council going bust.)
Before that, questions on Scotland at 11.30am might provide an opportunity for other parties to enjoy the turmoil in the SNP.
A topical session on the select committee corridor: as the government draws up plans to restrict disability benefits, the Work and Pensions Committee will begin an inquiry into the employment of disabled people. It will take evidence from charities and experts at 9.25 am.
Tom Pursglove, the legal migration minister, and Guy Opperman, the transport minister, will be quizzed by the European Scrutiny Committee about post-Brexit entry and exit checks at 2.30pm.
Gillian Keegan, the education secretary, will outline plans to lift the requirement on faith schools to keep half of their places open to children of different religions. |
