Donald Trump falsely accused Vice President Harris of hiding her Black heritage. Yesterday: Trump said Harris "was Indian all the way" before she "became a Black person." It came during a combative interview with Black journalists — we fact-checked it here. The fallout: Harris called it a show of "disrespect" from Trump. His attack on Harris's racial identity moves the presidential contest into a new phase, and may alienate some voters. Read this story         Iran vowed revenge for yesterday's killing of a Hamas leader in Tehran. The latest: Israel has not claimed responsibility for the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, but Iran said it would retaliate against Israel. Zooming out: The killing dealt a blow to cease-fire negotiations to end the war in Gaza. This morning, Israel announced the death of another Hamas leader. In the U.S.: United and Delta canceled flights to Israel. And Trump falsely accused Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who is Jewish, of being a "proud member of Hamas." Read this story         The man accused of plotting the Sept. 11 attacks reached a plea deal with the U.S. The deal: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two others will avoid the death penalty in exchange for pleading guilty to all charges, including the murder of the 2,976 people in 2001. What it means: Some of the most significant, decades-long cases of prisoners held at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba could finally be over. Sentencing may start next summer. (WeatherBell) The latest: The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a disturbance near Puerto Rico. It could develop into a storm and hit the southeast U.S., some forecasts show. More extreme weather: Ground temperatures in East Antarctica have soared more than 50 degrees above normal in the region's second major heat wave in the past two years. What to know: Rates for 17 of the 34 most common cancers are increasing in progressively younger generations, according to a study published yesterday. Why? It's probably due to generational changes in diet, lifestyle and environmental exposures, researchers said. Experts say earlier screening could help. (The Washington Post) The data: U.S. rent prices have climbed about 19% since 2019 — but only about 1% in the past year, a Post analysis shows. The slowdown comes as more new homes hit the market.
