| Labour makes a mockery of PMQs | A dull session of PMQs was dominated by ambitious Labour backbenchers throwing softball questions to Sir Keir Starmer, setting him up again and again to attack Kemi Badenoch. Of all the issues MPs' constituents might want them to raise with the prime minister, whether the leader of the opposition supports fracking is surely not one. At least seven of the 12 questions Labour MPs were allotted could have been written by Sir Keir himself. It makes a mockery of the half hour slot set aside each week for the PM to be held to account. The same thing happened under the Conservatives, of course, but it is no excuse for the Labour Party, whose election campaign slogan was one word: "Change." | | | | Written by Archie Mitchell |

| Tomorrow inside the Westminster bubble | Our political commentator Andrew Grice on what to look out for | The Commons sits at 9.30am for environment, food and rural affairs questions, followed by 20 minutes of questions to Sarah Sackman, the solicitor general. Then Lucy Powell, leader of the House, will set out next week's business. Main business of the day is the Lords Spiritual (Women) Act 2015 (Extension) Bill, "to extend the period within which vacancies among the Lords spiritual are to be filled by bishops who are women". Does not sound like the most urgent thing in the world. The Department of Health and Social Care will lay a statutory instrument which will require millers to add 250 micrograms of folic acid per 100 grams of non-wholemeal flour. "This will help reduce neural tube defects in pregnancies, which can cause brain and spinal defects in babies." Anneliese Dodds, the development minister, will take part in meetings about gender equality, climate change and food security at Cop29 in Baku. Rachel Reeves will deliver her first Mansion House speech hosted by the City of London Corporation, traditionally one of the chancellor's big set pieces. Hilary Benn, Northern Ireland secretary, will join the first and deputy first ministers for a gala dinner at Hillsborough Castle as part of a summit for investors | |
