Hello and welcome to your latest Independent Climate round-up. Scientists have warned that "dangerous climate breakdown" has arrived after January 2025 became the warmest January on record globally, defying expectations that this year might be cooler. The average global temperature last month was 13.23°C, 0.79°C above the 1991–2020 January average and 1.75°C above pre-industrial levels, according to the European space agency Copernicus. January 2025 marks the 18th month in the last 19 where global temperatures exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Copernicus attributes this primarily to greenhouse gas emissions from burning coal, oil, and gas, with natural climate factors failing to provide expected cooling. | LA was hit by wildfires in the hottest January on record globally (Reuters) | Scientists warn that the persistent rise in temperatures increases the risk of extreme weather events, including heatwaves, wildfires, and intense storms. They stress the urgency of global climate action to curb emissions and prevent further environmental and economic devastation. Despite 2024 being the hottest year on record, new US President Donald Trump has reversed climate policies, calling his predecessor Joe Biden's approach "climate extremism." EPA chief Lee Zeldin, who once acknowledged climate threats, now questions climate science, dismissing past warming predictions. The agency's new goal is to "restore American energy dominance" in ways Zeldin claims will be "best for the environment." More climate news: | |
