Trump To Confirm English As U.S.’s First Language

President Trump is set to sign an executive order to confirm English as the U.S.'s official language. Trump has previously addressed the importance of migrants learning English.

He said: “We have languages coming into our country. We don’t have one instructor in our entire nation that can speak that language. These are languages—it’s the craziest thing—they have languages that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It’s a very horrible thing.”

The 78-year-old made the remarks following an appearance at the southern border, alongside Texas Gov. Greg Abbott last year. He said that migrants were entering the country speaking “truly foreign languages.” “Nobody speaks them,” he said at the time.

Trump further said that schools in New York were packed with “pupils from foreign countries, from countries where they don’t even know what the language is.” He added: "We have nobody that even teaches it. These are languages that nobody ever heard of."

U.S. Consumers Cut Spending in January More Drastically Than at Any Point in the Last Four Years

U.S. consumers cut spending by 0.2% in January from the previous month, the most since February 2021, even as inflation declined.

Inflation dropped to 2.5% in January compared with a year earlier, down from 2.6% in December. Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core prices dropped to 2.6%, the lowest since June, from 2.9%.

Despite the positive news, the key question preoccupying many American consumers, investors, and business executives is whether Trump’s extensive tariff proposals will push prices higher in the coming months.

Worries about tariffs pushing prices higher have sent consumer confidence plunging, unwinding the modest gains that had occurred after the election. Americans are also expecting inflation to move higher in the coming months. That’s a risky trend because if consumers and businesses expect higher prices, they may act in ways to lift inflation, such as accelerating their purchases and boosting demand.

Trump, Zelenskyy To Meet for Key Deal As NATO Allies, Russia Wait, Watch

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday is set to meet with President Trump for the first time since he re-entered the White House to sign what could be a key minerals deal to help end Russia’s war.

Trump on Wednesday told reporters that Zelenskyy could "forget about" any ambitions to join NATO, but the Ukrainian president also said that day that he needs security guarantees, otherwise "we won't have a ceasefire, nothing will work, nothing."

Trump told reporters that by entering into a minerals deal with Washington, Kyiv will be granted "automatic security" guarantees by the mere presence of American extractors on Ukrainian soil.

But it remains unclear if this "guarantee" will be enough to comfort Zelenskyy, and according to former CIA Moscow Station Chief Dan Hoffman, there are too many outstanding factors to determine whether Putin would be deterred, including Kyiv's rearmament capabilities and whether NATO nations would agree to send in troops to Ukraine.
