Training helps protect from hazards

NEW ORLEANS (UPI) -- U.S. psychologists suggest workers at hazardous work sites should receive hands-on and other interactive training such as behavioral modeling and simulation.

Study leader Michael Burke of Tulane University in New Orleans says less interactive training -- lectures, films, reading materials and videos -- can cover safety in less dangerous jobs. However, in hazardous job situations interactive training helps better prepare workers to avoid accidents.

Intel announces costly recall

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (UPI) -- U.S. chipmaker Intel said Monday an error in a new chip design would cost the company $700 million in recall costs.

Intel said it would take a charge against fourth quarter earnings for the mistake, MarketWatch reported.

"Since this issue affected some of the chipset units shipped and produced in the fourth quarter of 2010, the company will take a charge against cost of goods sold, which is expected to reduce the fourth quarter gross margin ...

Inflation in China slows exports

BEIJING (UPI) -- Shipping firms say an annual pre-holiday rush in China slowed markedly this year, with U.S. buyers reacting to higher prices for Chinese goods.

The weeklong New Year celebration that began Monday in China normally brings a four-week rush to get goods headed to the United States to Chinese ports on time, The New York Times reported. This year, the rush didn't develop until two weeks before the holiday, shippers said.

Oracle settles kickback case

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Technology giant Oracle agreed to pay $46 million to settle claims concerning kickbacks at Sun Microsystems Inc., the U.S. Justice Department said.

Oracle purchased Sun Microsystems in 2010, making it responsible for the settlement, which involves Sun Microsystems paying consultants to have them recommend their products to federal agencies between 1997 and 1999.
