Sports Update For Indiana Tuesday February 1, 2011 | Baseball Alderson: Owners' woes won't affect Mets NEW YORK (UPI) -- New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson said Monday he doesn't expect the team's operations to be affected by its owners' Bernie Madoff-related troubles. Alderson told reporters his plans to field a competitive a team won't be altered even though team owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon announced Friday they were seeking minority investors amid the fallout from the Madoff Ponzi scheme investment scandal. While admitting that "circumstances have changed," Alderson said, "The plan and the approach that I've taken over the last two months has not been affected at all by any other outside factors." The Wilpons and Mets co-owner Saul Katz face a lawsuit from the trustee for Madoff's victims, who contends they profited from the disgraced financier's multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme and is seeking millions in restitution. Alderson made the comments while announcing the Mets had signed knuckle-ball pitcher R.A. Dickey to a two-year deal. Terms of the deal weren't revealed, but the New York Post reported the contract is worth roughly $8 million. Dickey compiled an 11-9 record with a 2.84 ERA in 27 games game last year, bringing his record over an eight-year career to 33-37 with a 4.70 ERA in 171 games (74 starts). The international friendly had been set for Feb. 9 in Cairo. Officials said other potential venues were explored, but in the end the U.S. team decided to leave the date open. "We were excited about the opportunity to play against Egypt, but due to the current situation all parties agreed it was best to cancel the match," U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said. "We appreciate the efforts of the Egyptian Football Association and the U.S. State Department as we worked through this situation." The cancellation means the next game for the U.S. national team won't come until March 26 against Argentina, with a match against Paraguay following three days later.
