Old pipes, fresh looks
While an old pipe might be the reason you never read during college, now it can become the very thing that holds your current unread books, thanks to Stella Bleu Designs. Offering both ready-to-go and custom pieces (for which she'll even come to your house to plot the layout), Stella's founder -- a recent Dallas transplant -- scavenges salvage yards and local suppliers for materials to convert into home fixtures, more often than not sturdy metal pipes she cuts to size before reassembling using pipe joints, but not after using either, as she's not into half-baked designs. Inspired by everything from vintage decor to Mario Bros, work includes:
Bookshelves: Options include built-in lighting, angled steps, and multiple offset levels, sure to please fans of asymmetrical structures, and companies with freakishly large carbon footprints.
Lamps: Seemingly wrenched from ancient factories, these pieces juxtapose a warming glow with the austerity of cold metal, perfect for worshipers of Ronnie James Frio.
Coat Racks: While pipes are still her jam, the sweetest of these were harvested from maple stripped off an old gym floor, and hide vestiges of foul lines, school logos, even sneaker streaks -- a far more innocent streaking than the kind you engaged in after Pipe Studies 101.
