Salvaging a split of the series was realistic after the Los Angeles Dodgers lost the first two games of their four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke pitching the final two games can elicit that kind of confidence. And after Kershaw held up his end Saturday night, Greinke was on his heels with another solid outing that had him in line for the win entering the eighth inning.

That is when Adam Liberatore and Juan Nicasio took the ball, and minutes later the Cardinals ensured they would win the series by scoring three runs, pushing them to a 4-2 win Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.

The loss highlighted a few of the Dodgers' problems. The first is an inability to find a consistent bridge from the starter to closer Kenley Jansen. The second is the teams sudden woes on offense. And, finally, the teams 2015 record against the Cardinals and San Francisco Giants, teams expected to be the Dodgers primary competition for a National League pennant. They have yet to play the Washington Nationals, another team expected to contend.

The past two weeks we havent been playing our best baseball, in my opinion, Greinke said after holding the Cardinals to one run over 6 2/3 innings.

Its just not everything clicking, Greinke continued. Its been OK, but I wouldnt say anything is standing out as positive. Its just a lot of OK. Our record is close to .500 over the past two weeks.

Going back 15 games, the Dodgers are actually under. 500 at 6-9. That includes this series loss to St. Louis and the previous weekends series loss in St. Louis. The Dodgers are 2-5 against the Cardinals and 2-7 against the Giants, the club that highlighted the teams offensive problems last month.

Things would not seem so bleak had Nicasio, or someone else, just been able to get the ball to Jansen with the lead intact. Nicasio is just the latest reliever to fail at that job as the 4.86 bullpen ERA over the past two weeks was the second worst in the league entering Sunday. It worsened after Liberatore and Nicasio allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning, with Nicasio taking the blown save and loss.

We havent been nearly as consistent as we were early, manager Don Mattingly said of the bullpen. Were searching for a guy to get the ball to Kenley. Weve had some games that we feel like wouldnt have gotten away from us had we been able to get the ball to Kenley.

It would also help if the offense could find a way to score without hitting home runs, or if it could manage more than a couple runs a game. The team has scored two or fewer runs 14 times in its last 22 games, and it did not score more than two in any of these four against St. Louis. It also did not hit a single homer. In fact, the Dodgers have failed to score two or more runs in six of their seven games against the Cardinals.

And in their previous trip to San Francisco from May 19-21 they scored a total of zero in three games.

The scoring problems loomed large Sunday after the Dodgers put the first two hitters on base in the fifth inning against Lance Lynn. Yasiel Puig, Adrian Gonzalez and Justin Turner, who already had a pair of two-out, run-scoring hits in the game, all flied out to strand Greinke and Joc Pederson.

It ultimately contributed to the loss and the teams current myriad of issues.

Its one of those opportunities you hope doesnt come back to bite you, Mattingly said. You get the first two guys on with the good part of our order up, youre disappointed when you dont do anything there.
