Everything You Never Knew About The Last Starfighter

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 04:00 AM PDT

The Last Starfighter was the story of a guy who escaped trailer park life by becoming really good at an arcade game- his epic high score got the attention of aliens who were in need of a hero, and a generation of kids who grew up loving video games were officially hooked by this dream come true premise.

When The Last Starfighter came out in 1984 arcade obsessed kids just couldn't get enough, but most of us knew very little about the movie except for what we saw on the screen, and the fact that Atari promised us a Last Starfighter arcade game but never delivered.

Now that io9 has revealed Everything You Never Knew About The Making of Last Starfighter it's time to dust off the VCR and rewatch this fun 80s flick, if only to remind ourselves why we were so obsessed with it as kids!

Dad Fighting Cancer Makes Awesome "Eye of the Tiger" Music Video

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 02:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Darren Mullery, 39, of Ireland learned that he has pancreatic cancer while his wife, Danielle, was pregnant with their daughter. Now Darren is a father, so he's got a lot to live for.

But it's unlikely that he will survive. So Darren is focusing on what he can do for his family, especially baby Noelle. He made this music video to show her after he dies how hard he fought and took his cancer in good humor.

It builds slowly, turning into a funny and inspiring day-in-the-life story using music from "Eye of the Tiger" by the band Survivor. Darren and his friends ham it up, demonstrating how a dad fights cancer because he loves his daughter.

The Great Tapestry of Scotland

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 12:00 AM PDT

In the same vein as the Bayeux Tapestry, a group of over a thousand Scottish stitchers have embroidered the history of Scotland on 160 panels, making The Great Tapestry of Scotland the longest such embroidery in the world.

Author and textile designer Kate Davies posted photographs of the details of the panels, along with commentary. Links to other posts in the series are at the bottom of her first post.

The Great Tapestry of Scotland is on display now through September 13th at the Scottish Parliament. See the panels in their entirety in this slideshow. -via Metafilter

This Is What a Flock of Hummingbirds Looks Like

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 11:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

YouTube user Ivan Paras calls it an "infestation" and writes that "I think I have a hummingbird problem." Watch an ever increasing number of hummingbirds visit his two nectar feeders. One of those feeders rests in his hand, but the hummingbirds show no fear.

What would be a good title for a hummingbird-themed horror movie?

Color The World Cubicle Gray With The Executive Coloring Book

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 10:00 PM PDT

The executive lifestyle is not generally thought of as a colorful lifestyle, in fact, uniformity and a lack of color are encouraged in the office, at least in terms of dress code:

That’s what makes The Executive Coloring Book so special- color adders get to add a bit of color to the world of gray suits and navy blue power ties, and maybe learn a thing or two about the briefcase luggers who lord over the cubicle crowd:

This wonderful coloring book/satirical piece of social commentary was created by Marcie Hans, Dennis Altman, and Martin A. Cohen, three revolutionary folks who appreciate how important coloring books are to people with too much time on their hands.

Their color-able commentary on corporate life came out way back in 1961, when corporations had yet to become people and post-war Americans were learning how to maintain the status quo, and yet it's somehow just as relatable today as when it came out over fifty years ago.

Real Life Fox and Hound Story

This fox was found malnourished and minus his tail at age four weeks. The vets who treated him dubbed him "Forrest Stump." Wildlife ranger Gary Zammit, employed by Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre at Gwel an Mor in Cornwall, England, was known in the area for his conservation work and his appreciation for foxes. Tipped off about Forrest, Zammit gave him a home at the wildlife center.

Forrest the tailless fox became fast friends with Barney, Zammit's (mostly) tailless dog. The adorable duo loves to spend their days together at play. Said Zammit,

"It really was love at first sight with them both. Barney is so gentle with him and they play for hours and hours. They are exhausting to watch. I think they might be kindred spirits - even without tails to wag you can tell they are happiest when they are together!"

Behind the Scenes of the First Superman Comic Book

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 08:00 PM PDT

When it was published in 1938, Action Comics #1 cost 10 cents. It was the first appearance of Superman. As a result, surviving copies can sell for more than a million dollars.

Joe Shuster drew the now famous cover image. It shows Superman heroically lifting a wrecked car. Or we assume that he's being a hero. Have you actually read Action Comics #1? I haven't.

Fortunatelly, artist Kerry Callen has a scanned an interior page to reveal what Superman is actually doing.

P.S. Thanks to Callen's encyclopedic knowledge of comic book history, we also know that Batman is a hoarder.

"Ma'am, There's a Lemur on Your Baby."

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 06:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Musicats78)

All parents dread that, someday, they will hear those words spoken to them. For Angie Widener, that possibility became a reality when she visited the Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Goddard, Kansas. There, animals roam a bit more freely than at conventional zoos.

The park doesn't allow visitors to bring in strollers, so Widener brought her nine week-old daughter Finley in with her car seat. She and her other children were having a great time. Then a passerby noticed that Finley had made a new friend:

She told HuffPost over e-mail that she was watching her two older children feed the animals when she heard a stranger laugh and say, "Um, ma'am, there is a lemur on your baby."

"I was shocked, but the zookeeper assured me she was safe, so my two older daughters and I got a few laughs and we snapped some pictures," Widener said. Pictures that have now made our day.

Anchovies

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 05:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

See that big black blob in the water? That’s not an oil slick -it’s a school of fish! Still, when a swimmer gets close to them, it looks like a drop of dishwashing liquid in greasy water as the fish try to avoid a potential predator. These are anchovies, the dreaded pizza topping. I hear they don’t smell nearly as nasty when they’re alive.

When the massive school showed up at Scripps Pier in San Diego, Scripps Oceanography Institute sent graduate students Julia Fiedler, Sean Crosby, and Bonnie Ludka out get it on video. Scientists at the institute say they haven’t seen such a school in at least 30 years. Look closely, and you’ll see a leopard shark or two swimming along with the students.  -via Viral Viral Videos

Now THIS is what animated GIFs are made for!

New York City-based photographer Romain Laurent started to create looping portraits as a personal challenge late last year. "As far as the intention of the series, it's a way for me to explore a hybrid medium, experiment and being spontaneous while sticking to a short weekly deadline," Laurent told Colossal, "There isn't a common concept between each loop, I just 'go with the flow' and see what comes to my mind each week."

Man Takes His Left Foot on a Farewell Tour before Amputation

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Joseph Pleban of Fredericksburg, Virginia learned that doctors would have to amputate his left foot because of a rare bone and joint disease called pigmented villonodular synovitis. This affliction caused tumors to form on the connective tissue of his joints. Doctors informed Pleban that the only way to stop the spread would be to amputate his lower leg.

Pleban is an athletic person who engages in snowboarding, wakeboarding, and rugby. The loss of a leg can be a heavy blow to an athlete. But Pleban decided to have fun with his looming amputation.

He took his left leg on a "farewell tour" and photographed it on adventures. His sister documented these events on a Facebook page called The Last Adventures of Joe's Left Foot.

Pleban goofed around, pretending that he would find a cheaper way to get rid of his foot.

He also got a tattoo that could be helpful to surgeons.

Pleban's amputation is now complete. He's back at home with his family, resting and recovering from surgery. He also appeared on reddit, inviting people to ask him questions about his foot and its adventures.

The Paranoid That Destroyed the Noid

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Do you recall the Domino’s Pizza mascot, the Noid? Their catchphrase was “Avoid the Noid,” the gremlin that made bad things happen to pizza. Domino’s used the Noid in advertising from 1979 to 1989, which I remember well, but I don’t recall that one incident that spelled the demise of the character. See, there was a fellow in Atlanta named Kenneth Lamar Noid, and he was convinced that Domino’s was making fun of him with the Noid character. On January 30, 1989, he took matters into his own hands, which did not work out well for Domino’s. Read the entire story at Pricenomics.

Aparently this incident was not related to the reason that Domino’s dropped its “30 minutes or free” promotion in 1993. That was due to the auto accidents.

Harry Potter Juggalo Tattoo

The One Saga to Ruin Them All

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Fantasy characters gathered on Facebook to tell the story of their people. And it shall continue. When George Takei posted this, it was followed by a slew of image macros in the comments that are quite funny.

Say what you will about Twilight, those books changed my youngest daughter from a slacker who looked at reading as a chore into a bibliophile who tries all genres. She knows now that the Twilight books were not high quality, but they were what she needed at age ten. She’s into Vonnegut now, and when she gets through those, I’ll introduce her to Douglas Adams and Solzhenitsyn.

Ten Reasons Not to Trust Your Memory

Have you ever read an interesting story, noticed an attractive design or heard about a brilliant concept for a new invention and then later "originated" it, mentally patting yourself on the back for your bright idea? It happens to the best of us. George Harrison, former Beatle, for example. Whether or not you need one more reason not to trust your memory, here are ten! You can thank me later, and if I can remember to, I'll pass your thanks on to Alltime10s.

This Tarantula Is Actually a Woman in Body Paint

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 09:00 AM PDT

It looks like a tarantula, but what you're actually seeing is a contortionist covered in body paint. She's bent over backwards in a bridge position. You can see her move like a spider in this video.

(Video Link)

Isn't that amazing? This is the work of Emma Fay, a body painting artist in the UK. She recently hired two contortionists to serve as models. Lowri Thomas spent 5 hours undergoing this makeup transformation. Jonathan Macauley photographed it. You can see more photos of their work here, including these contortionists appearing as a giraffe and a seahorse.

File this away for future reference, because you’ll never know when you might need to do the same. Meanwhile, get a drain cover for that hole -it can save both wildlife and your basement in case something falls in and plugs it up. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Illustrated Rules Of Etiquette For Everyday Life Situations

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 07:00 AM PDT

There is a lot of wisdom to be found in Christie Young’s simply wonderful series The Rules, which she creates for GOOD Magazine.

The Brooklyn based illustrator has clearly lived a full, and occasionally a bit drawn out, life and thus has some pearls of knowing howness to share with the comic loving world:

With everyday life situations constantly rearing their ugly heads, like being invited to the first backyard BBQ of the year, or when you go to a wedding and then nurse a hangover the next day, it’s good to know that Christie has simple, illustrated solutions readily available for our eyeballs to view.

Christie may be young in age, at heart, and in last name, but her illustrated words are just as true as if they’d come out of the mouth/pencil of an old person.

How Godzilla Should Have Ended

The folks at How It Should Have Ended are back and ready to take on a 50-ton monster! I don’t want to give away too much of what’s going to happen here, but Superman shows up. It would have been better with Batman, but it’s still delightfully goofy. If you haven’t seen the latest Godzilla film, this does contain spoilers. I haven’t, and now I don’t feel the need to. -via Gamma Squad
