A Little Fall Pick-Me-Up, On Us

Hi Beauty,

There’s something about this time of year that makes me want to refresh my beauty routine. I’m swapping in a little more hydration for my skin, reaching for richer skincare at night, and making a few small changes to my makeup routine for fall.

If you’re doing the same, I wanted to remind you of a great offer we have running right now:

Get a FREE Retinol Alternative Bakuchiol 2% Elixir with any order of $100+. Did I mention it’s a $94 value?

Here are a few of the things I’m reaching for this season:

Silky Dream Cleansing Cream: A gentle, nourishing cleanser that leaves skin feeling soft and replenished. It’s especially nice when your skin is craving a little more comfort.
Hyaluronic Acid HA 1.5% Elixir: For an extra boost of hydration and that plump, fresh-skin feeling.
Indigo Dream Renewal Cream: A beautiful addition to a nighttime routine when you want something a little more restorative.
Complexion Perfecting Serum Foundation: A lightweight, skincare-infused foundation that gives skin a fresh, naturally radiant finish.
Tinted Sculpted Lip Oil: One of my favorite ways to make a small change for the season. It provides nourishing color with a beautiful, silky finish.

And of course, when your order reaches $100+, you’ll receive the Retinol Alternative Bakuchiol 2% Elixir as a complimentary gift.

A little fall refresh for your routine, with something extra from us.

Warmly,

Nichole

Fitness is really boring

Fitness is really boring

Hello!

For better or for worse, I tend to look at the comments underneath my articles. One caught my eye recently.

It said something along the lines of: “Fitness is really boring, and so are all these people who are obsessed with it nowadays.”

As you may already have guessed, I disagree. But not for the reasons you might expect.

The reason for every injury you’ll ever have, and how to prevent it
I tried the 12-minute daily workout Helen Mirren’s used for her ‘whole life’ – here’s why it’s stood the test of time
Do these three things each week to be fitter than most Brits

To call fitness boring, I think it’s important to define it first. Those who find fitness boring tend to synonymise it with puritanical figures who preach the virtues of emotionless hard work: turn up, run, lift, grunt, sweat, then shape your entire life around being able to do this again the next day.

But to me, fitness represents physical problem solving. The fitter you are, the more obstacles you can overcome in life.

You can play with your kids on the floor then hop back up unencumbered. You can catch yourself when you trip on the street, run when you’re late for a train and explore a new city while on holiday. You can even buy something rogue on Facebook marketplace without worrying about how you'll get it home – I speak from experience here, having hiked a heavy oak table more than a mile.

Better yet, you can do all of these things comfortably and competently.

The same applies in sport. A fit body allows you to hit the five-a-side pitch and drop the shoulder without worrying about your ankle rolling, or jump on the netball court knowing your knees and Achilles tendons are up to the job.

Most of us exercise to be better at living, rather than living to be better at exercising, and fitness widens your horizons. It allows for a larger life, leaving few activities off limits and priming you for any potential adventures.

The act of getting in shape doesn’t have to be dull either: despite what social media seems to tell us, exercise exists beyond running and trips to the gym.

Muscle strengthening activities include anything that challenges your muscles to work against load, whether that’s a barbell, band or your body weight. You could do press-ups in your living room, lunge up a hill, hit a Pilates class or try the 12-minute bodyweight workout Helen Mirren has used for years.

As for cardio perks, these are on offer from any activity that raises your heart rate and leaves you breathing hard. If you can find a way to do this that you enjoy, and keep coming back to it, your vital organs will thank you – whether that’s dancing, hill-walking, swimming or, in the case of one friend recently, kickboxing.

So is fitness boring? For some people, yes, as much as it pains me to say it. In many cases, this can be overcome through experimentation; trying something new, doing it with a group. But for a select few, this still won’t deliver much satisfaction.

But fitness makes life anything but boring. And for that reason, moving more is one of the few universal prescriptions I am happy to throw my weight behind.

Hope that helps!

Harry

I’m a personal trainer and this is how I would coach someone in their 60s for better health and longevity

In the 90s and noughties, jogging was the default exercise. But in recent years, a wealth of research surrounding the benefits of strength training, particularly as we age, have risen to the fore.

At this point, we all know this practice is good for us, but we don't all know where to start – especially if we are older.

I want these features to be as helpful and valuable as possible, so I quizzed Third Space strength and conditioning master trainer Will Pate on how he might approach coaching a 25-year-old versus a 65-year-old.

His answer might surprise you: "The principle are the same."

In this feature, Pate explains the adjustments he would make to ensure success and avoid injury. He also shares the five easiest things anyone can start doing today to improve their health and fitness within weeks.

The two-second movement than can improve longevity and help with weight loss

One of the most valuable things I can tell you about exercise is just how low the threshold is for experiencing benefits. Simply standing up delivers significant health perks.

In this piece, Dr Daniel Bailey of Brunel University explains how the muscular contractions caused by getting on your feet can break up sedentary spells, increase longevity and reduce your risk of several chronic diseases.

WORKOUT OF THE WEEK

In and out in 10 minutes

This is one of the most versatile workout frameworks there is. Employed correctly, you could use it for life and stay in enviable shape. The system is simple.

Set a 10-minute timer and perform the sequence below. In each minute, work for 30 seconds and rest for 30 seconds.

- Minutes one and six: Squatting or lunging exercise

- Minutes two and seven: Pulling exercise

- Minutes three and eight: Hip hingeing exercise

- Minutes four and nine: Pushing exercise

- Minutes five and 10: Rest

You know when you step foot in the gym that this workout will only take 10 minutes, which I've found can boost motivation and enjoyment. It requires minimal kit, hits every major muscle group and flits between upper and lower body exercises for bonus cardio perks.

As your fitness improves over time and it starts to feel easy, there are plenty of ways to progress it too. you could change the work:rest ratio each minute to 35:25, then 40:20, then 45:15; you could add extra rounds to make it a 15- or 20-minute workout; you can use heavier weights; you can pick more challenging exercise variations.

A beginner example could be:

Set a 10-minute timer and perform the sequence below. In each minute, work for 30 seconds and rest for 30 seconds.

- Minutes one and six: Sit-to-stand from a chair, box or bench

- Minutes two and seven: Kneeling renegade row

- Minutes three and eight: Glute bridge

- Minutes four and nine: Kneeling press-up or hands-elevated press-up

- Minutes five and 10: Rest

An advanced version could be:

Set a 25-minute timer and perform the sequence below five times. In each minute, work for 45 seconds and rest for 15 seconds.

- Minute one: Double dumbbell alternating lunge

- Minute two: Renegade row with cross-body mountain climber

- Minute three: Dumbbell Romanian deadlift

- Minute four: Commandos

- Minute five: Rest
