* Review - Platform Trends: Nvidia Opens the Floodgates
It's not news that Nvidia Corp. and ATI Technologies continue to play Whac-A-Mole with each other whenever either ships a new graphics processor. But silicon sage Vince Freeman says ATI's been taking more lumps lately -- and just as its Radeon X1900 caught up to Nvidia's GeForce 7800 line, the latter's made the move to cooler-running, performance-boosting 90-nanometer-process technology.

Platform Trends: Nvidia Opens the Floodgates Some Bad Days for ATI
It seems ATI Technologies and Nvidia Corp. can keep this up forever: The PC video giants won't stop trying to outdo each other by introducing new graphics processing units and cards on a breakneck schedule. It seems that every time you turn around, one or the other is launching a faster or cooler or smaller or less expensive replacement for an existing product, with the battle raging in the entry-level and mainstream-budget markets as well as between flagship gaming GPUs.
Lately, Nvidia's been enjoying the lead in this escalating hardware fight, taking its popular GeForce 7 Series to the next level. When the GeForce 7800 line debuted in mid-2005, its performance was head and shoulders above what ATI could offer. It took the Canadian company until the third quarter to even make a response with the Radeon X1800, and then into 2006 before a credible challenger appeared in the form of the Radeon X1900.
During that time, Nvidia made no secret of its holding some surprises in reserve. The most obvious was a die shrink to join ATI in 90-nanometer rather than 110-nanometer-process engineering -- after all, if Nvidia could hold the reins of the high-performance graphics market for much of 2005 without the lower power requirements, decreased heat output, and higher clock speeds made possible by a die shrink, how strong would the GeForce 7 architecture be once the switch occurred?
Now we know. Nvidia has boosted clock speeds significantly while also making use of lower power and heat specifications to give ATI three new headaches in the form of the GeForce 7600 GT, 7900 GT, and 7900 GTX processors ...
