Biblical Battered Wife Syndrome: Christian Women and Domestic Violence

Biblical Battered Wife Syndrome: Christian Women and Domestic Violence

Escaping an abusive marriage is no easy task for many evangelical women, many of whom have pastors that say physical abuse is no reason for divorce. Read more »

Last week, AlterNet's Reproductive Justice & Gender newsletter was chock-full of good news for women -- the election of Obama (self-proclaimed feminist), the rescinding of the Global Gag Rule, and movement towards equal pay with the passing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in both the House and Senate. This week, we have more good news -- Obama signed the pay equity legislation -- followed by a big dose of bad: Dems stripped a provision from the economic stimulus bill that would have expanded contraception access for low-income women. Besides being a policy misstep (Who will pay for the cost of raising the children that teenaged or lower-income mothers can't afford to support?), the decision was arguably an ethical mistake as well (When Dems need to increase the likelihood that Republicans will vote for a bill, why single out an already marginalized group of women and use them as a bargaining chip?)

Thanks for reading,
