GUI TOOLKIT GAINS TIGHTER WIND RIVER INTEGRATION
Wind River announced the availability of a Linux-compatible, embedded GUI suite targeting industrial, defense, medical, automotive, and mobile devices. A result of the acquisition of Tilcon Software, Wind River Tilcon Graphics Suite 5.7 offers tight integration with Wind River Linux and Wind River Workbench, says the Intel-owned embedded firm.

16TB MINI-TOWER USES LINUX-READY SAN PROTOCOL
Coraid announced a storage-area network mini-tower for the SMB market. The EtherDrive SR821T Storage Appliance offers up to 16TB RAID-enabled storage in eight SATA-ready bays, provides dual gigabit Ethernet ports, supports VMware vSphere virtualization, and incorporates Coraid's Linux-ready ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) open storage protocol, says the company.

MONTAVISTA SHIPS MVL6 ON FIVE PLATFORMS
MontaVista Software announced the availability of MontaVista Linux 6 (MVL6), as well as five processor-specific Market Specific Distributions (MSDs) for its commercial embedded Linux development platform. The MSDs, which will soon be joined by dozens more, support ARM1176 and ARM926, Freescale MPC8xxx (PowerPC), Intel x86 (Pentium/Xeon), MIPS32, and Xilinx Virtex 5, says the company.

LINUX NETWORKING STACK PORTED TO MIPS64 CHIPS
French networking middleware firm 6Wind has ported its Linux-based networking stack to RMI's MIPS64-based XLR and XLS multi-core, multi-threaded processors. Optimized for multi-core, 6WindGate offers "ready-to-use layer 2-4" routing, QoS, IPv4-6, and XML-based UTM security management middleware, says the company.

STUDY: DUAL-MODE WIFI HANDSETS TO DOUBLE EVERY TWO YEARS
ABI Research has released a report predicting a doubling of dual-mode phones supporting both WiFi and cellular networks every two years. The research firm predicts that 144 million dual-mode handsets will ship this year, rising to more than 300 million in 2011.

AUTOMATION PC INCLUDES HOMEGROWN SOC
Advantech has announced a box PC that runs Linux using a SoC (system-on-chip) of the company's own devising. Intended for harsh environments, the ARK-1310 has CompactFlash storage and includes two USB 2.0 ports, two 10/100 Ethernet ports, and four serial ports, the company says.

MORE SIGNS POINT TO SAMSUNG LINUX PHONE
A Samsung executive has confirmed the company is preparing its own version of Linux for a new smartphone, says an industry report. Meanwhile, another story has leaked a sketch of a Linux-based "Samsung i8320" phone said to be near completion, and this device may be Samsung's first LiMo-compliant model.

ANDROID DEMO'D ON MIPS-DRIVEN 1080P DISPLAY
MIPS Technologies announced two more video-oriented system-on-chip vendor partners who will use its MIPS-architecture Android implementation, developed by Embedded Alley. Sigma Designs is demonstrating an Android- and MIPS-based set-top box (STB) prototype displaying 1080p video, and ALi Corp. announced it is also joining MIPS' Android partner program.

SHARP SPINS UBUNTU-BASED PALMTOP
Sharp announced an heir to its Zaurus line of Linux-based PDAs: an Ubuntu Linux-based palmtop with claimed three-second boot-ups and ten-hour battery life. The "NetWalker PC-Z1 Mobile Internet Tool" is equipped with an ARM Cortex-A8 based Freescale i.MX515 SoC, a five-inch WSVGA touchscreen, and a QWERTY keyboard, says Sharp.

NOKIA DEBUTS SMARTPHONE-LIKE MAEMO 5 LINUX DEVICE
Nokia announced its "N900" heir to the N810 Internet Tablet, running its new Maemo 5 Linux distribution. Upgrading to a Texas Instruments ARM Cortex-A8-based OMAP3430 SoC with 1GB of memory and 32GB flash, the device adds 3G HSPA connectivity, and offers a 3.5-inch, 800 × 480 touchscreen and five megapixel camera.
