TIA'S TIPS
Folate is an essential
building block in producing and maintaining healthy blood - the life force of
the body. Folate therefore plays a continuing and endless role in the growth
and healthy functioning of our bodies throughout our lives. Folate, also known
as Folic acid is one of eight vitamins within the B complex known as vitamin B9.
Folate is the form of the nutrient found naturally occurring in food. Folic
acid is the synthetic or man-made form typically found in many supplements and
fortified foods. Folate was discovered in the 1930's by researcher Lucy Wills
and her colleagues while looking at yeast as a treatment for macrocytic anemia
(a red blood cell disorder) in pregnant women. They found that yeast did help the
condition but it wasn't until the 1940's, that Folate was isolated and
identified as the substance responsible for helping treat macrocytic anemia.[1]

Folate is vital to the
complete development of red blood cells which help carry oxygen throughout the body.
Without enough Folate, the red blood cells cannot form properly and continue to
grow without dividing. Folate also helps support healthy circulation of the
blood in the body. In addition, Folate aids in the proper formation and
functioning of white blood cells which are vital to a strong immune system.[2]

Folate may be best known for
its importance in preconception and the prenatal nutrition of the parents,
especially the mother. Because Folate plays such a fundamental role in the
growth, production and division of all cells in the body, Folate is even more
essential during times of growth such as with pregnancy. A Folate deficiency can
lead to premature birth, low birth weight or problems with growth in infants.[3]
Folate has been shown to help prevent birth defects by supporting a structure
in the fetus called a neural tube. As the baby develops, the top part of the
neural tube helps form the baby's brain. The bottom part of the tube becomes
the baby's spinal column. When the neural tube does not close properly, serious
brain and spinal problems can result; spina bifida, for example. It has been
shown that mother's with inadequate supplies of Folate give birth to babies
with neural tube defects in greater number.[4]

Folate is of primary importance
in the regulation of homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid that
the body naturally forms as a result of the breakdown of methionine, another
amino acid. Under normal circumstances, homocysteine is converted to amino
acids that are non-harmful. But, this conversion can only take place with
adequate supplies of Folate, along with vitamins B6 and B12. It appears that
the lower the levels of the three B vitamins, the higher the homocysteine
level. High levels of homocysteine have been associated with an increased risk
of many forms of cardiovascular disease including atherosclerosis, a hardening
of the arteries due to accumulated fatty plaques.[5]

It is believed that 1 out of
5 people in the United States get only 50% of the Recommended Daily Allowance
(or RDA) for Folate. A Folate deficiency can occur quite easily, especially if
we consume a diet high in processed-foods. Folate is destroyed easily by light,
heat and most types of cooking. The potency of Folate diminishes with most food
processing and preparation and can lessen even more when foods are stored at
room temperature for long periods of time. A Folate deficiency can occur more
easily with those who are under high stress, fatigued, smoke, consume alcohol
or excessive coffee or those suffering from a loss of adrenal function. Those
taking high amounts of vitamin C over 2,000 milligrams or so or epileptics
taking medication may require more Folate. Skin conditions such as psoriasis cause
the body to deplete Folate rapidly and may require increased amounts. Various
drugs and medication taken for a wide range of reasons, such as birth control
pills, may hinder the absorption of Folate by as much as 50%.[6]

Symptoms of a Folate
deficiency can be very similar to a vitamin B12 deficiency and can include anemia,
fatigue, irritability, forgetfulness, depression, paranoia and heart
palpitations. Also, mouth related symptoms such as a sore and inflamed tongue, gingivitis
and periodontal disease can be symptoms as well.[7]

The Recommended Daily
Allowance for Folate is 65 micrograms (or mcg) for infants 0-6 months, 80 mcg
for infants 7-12 months, 150 mcg for children 1-3 years, 200 mcg fir children
4-8 years, 300 mcg for males 9-13 years, 400 mcg for males 14 and older, 300
mcg for females 9-13 years, 400 mcg for females 14 and older, 600 mcg pregnant
females of any age and 500 mcg for lactating females of any age.[8]
Folate is derived from the
Latin word folium, meaning foliage, because of it being found in leafy green
vegetables such as kale, chard, broccoli and spinach. Other good sources of
Folate are beets and beet greens, asparagus, artichokes, sweet potatoes,
oranges, cantaloupe, bananas garbanzo, soy and lima beans, lentils and brewer's
yeast, liver and kidney.[9]

ROBERT RECOMMENDS
Folic acid, or its natural form Folate, was thought to be important only
for preventing birth defects and lowering levels of homocysteine.[10]
Now, new research shows that the B vitamin may extend life and lower our
chances for developing Alzheimer's disease.[11]
A recent article in the
journal Neurology reports that
elderly people with low blood levels of Folic acid and vitamin B12 have an
increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The study was conducted in
Sweden and included 370 adults age 75 or older with no medical evidence of
Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia. After following the subjects
for 3 years, the researchers concluded that people with low blood levels of
both Folic acid and vitamin B12 were at greater risk of developing Alzheimer's
disease than those with low levels of only one of the vitamins. In addition, researchers
at Oxford University recently reported that
Alzheimer's patients have substantially lower levels of Folic acid and vitamin
B12 than do normal people of the same age. They also found that a high
homocysteine level is a potent risk factor for Alzheimer's.[12]
A study published in the April 2000 issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
highlights the importance of
getting enough Folic acid throughout your life. Researchers from the University
of Kentucky measured levels of 18 nutrients, including Folate, in a category of
women not normally concerned with having children - thirty Catholic nuns that had
lived in the same convent for most of their lives and who generally ate the same
diet. As can be imagined, this presented an extremely rare unusually confined
and unique control group. Interestingly, half of the women ages 78 to 101 showed
brain changes
consistent with Alzheimer's disease when autopsied. And those who consumed the
least Folate had significantly more of the brain lesions and memory-destroying
plaque. This study cleary reveals a correlation between increased Folate
consumption and the reduction in memory destroying plaque, commonly found in
Alzheimer's disease.[13]
A low or
deficient blood level of Folate has been detected in 15 to 38 percent of adults
suffering from depression. There is now increasing evidence that
supplementation with a therapeutic dose of Folate can significantly improve a
variety of conditions of mental depression.[14]
In a recent trial involving 20 elderly patients with depressive disorders,
treatment with 50 mg/day of methyl-folate was associated with an 81 percent
response rate within six weeks. Researchers at the Harvard Medical School point
out that chronic conditions or factors like rheumatoid arthritis, certain
cancer treatments, alcoholism, and a poor diet can all lead to a Folate deficiency
and the potential for depression.[15]
Researchers at the Cleveland
Clinic Foundation have found that patients with end stage kidney disease have
extremely high homocysteine levels and can be protected from cardiovascular
events by supplementing with Folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12. Diabetic patients,
for example, tend to have high homocysteine levels. Folate is especially
important in its reduction. Recent research has also shown that low Folate
levels and high homocysteine levels are implicated in age-related hearing loss,
psoriasis, and restless leg syndrome. It is quite unusual that one single vitamin
like Folic acid can have such a profound effect on our health.[16]
Scientific controversy has
erupted around the fortification of flour and breakfast cereals with Folic
acid, the synthetic form of Folate. Fortification of foods with synthetic Folic
acid was started in the United States in 1998 in an effort to prevent birth
defects such as spina bifida, a devastating spinal abnormality. Such defects
are preventable. Women are advised to consume at least 400 mcg of Folic acid
daily.[17]
Fortification has been credited with a major decrease in the rates of birth
defects associated with Folic acid deficiency. However, more recently some researchers
have called this fortification into question primarily because of an increase
in cases of colon cancer in the U.S. There's no definitive proof that the
increase is linked to higher intakes of synthetic fortified Folic acid, but
colon cancer was on the decline before fortification was initiated in 1998.[18]
We would recommend avoiding
processed foods that have been artificially fortified with synthetic nutrients.
One of our basic positions on nutrition maintains that nutrition created
synthetically rarely, if ever, trumps the naturally occurring form. And more
often than not, synthetic forms of nutrition often have adverse and, even more
so, hard to determine at the onset but later discovered detrimental qualities. Instead,
we highly recommend the consumption of whole foods that contain Folate. We also
recommend supplementing with a whole food B-complex if you are pregnant or known
to be deficient. We maintain that it is important for all of us to have access
to the very best in whole food nutrients, particularly for prenatal purposes. We
recommend only whole food B-vitamins
and their cofactors, which are essential for the diverse requirements for
optimal nutrient assimilation and utilization.[19]
New Chapter provides an organic probiotic alternative to isolated or synthetic
vitamins and minerals. Their vitamins and minerals are cultured in organic soy
using natures most prized and studied probiotics, like lactobacilli acidophilus,
bifidus, rhamnosus, and saccharomyces cerevisiae. New Chapter delivers cultured
nutrients in their most bio-available form, very much the same way as miso,
kefir, tempeh, and yogurt. For this reason we prefer and recommend New
Chapter Organics' Coenzyme B Food Complex. This is a synergistic blend
of Folate and supporting B-Vitamins in their most active and natural form. Also
recommended is one of the very best prenatal vitamins, New Chapter Organics' Perfect
Prenatal. This prenatal multiple vitamin is a perfect blend of whole
food Folate and supporting vitamins, minerals, known to synergistically provide
balanced nutrition, the way nature intended!
Folate is also essential for
the function of the five oil soluble vitamins, A, D, E, F and vitamin K. Without
these critical fat soluble
nutrients our body could not function properly. Folate is vitally important to
our overall health and is clearly one of the keystone nutrients. Women who boost
their intakes of
Folate, B-12, and B-6 can reduce their risk of heart attack by 50%! [20]
As we've reported, this fact can be attributed to the reduction of the dangerous
amino acid homocysteine, which can build up in the blood without these
supporting vitamins. As we highly recommend supplementing with a premium whole
food multiple vitamin, we also recommend First Organics' Daily Multiple. This
is a smart method to ensure healthy levels of these most important nutrients.
Interestingly, our bodies
also produce its own Folate in our intestines by way of micro-flora (the 'good'
and 'bad' bacteria we maintain in our systems). Balance is the key factor for healthy
nutrient production.
It appears that over 500 species of bacteria live in the healthy human
digestive tract. Our intestinal
micro flora actually ferments soluble fiber to yield short-chain fatty acids
which supply 5-10% of human energy requirements. [21]
In addition, our internal flora produce at least seven essential nutrients,
supplementing our dietary intake of Folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid (B-5),
riboflavin (B-2), pyridoxine (B-6), cobalamin (B-12) and vitamin K. [22]
This is why we recommend probiotic supplementation to ensure our natural
production of these key nutrients. We recommend Enzymatic Therapy's Acidophilus
Pearlsproviding a proprietary blend of lactobacillus and
bifidobacterium which helps support healthy balanced intestinal flora.
