White Denim's South By Playlist
Bass player gets you into the festival groove

You've RSVP'd to every party at least twice, crafted a
bulletproof schedule for hopping said parties, and are ready
to totally own any and all free well drinks, but...isn't
there music involved in this thing? Here's a list of
essential tracks from can't-miss bands, courtesy of Steve
Terebecki, bassist for local heroes White Denim.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.: "Pink Lady
Lemonade"
The Japanese psychedelic rockers take you straight to outer
space with a looping guitar line under hallucinatory synth
washes and moaning vocal slurs, a hint that they're hooked
on something stronger than phonics.

Brazos: "Day Glo"
Hometown boys Brazos recall lazy afternoons over hazy piano
chords and meandering acoustic guitars, praising "the type
of wine that you don't mind spilling" (so, the kind that
keeps refilling?).

Juiceboxxx: "Thunder Jam #3"
Milwaukee's bathing-suited party rapper closes this number
with a fiery monologue on music and companionship; catch him
around Austin shirtless soaking up the Capri-sun.

Lou Barlow: "Don't Apologize"
The Dinosaur Jr. & Sebadoh alum unleashes sing-along vocals
over a unified front of stuttering drums, phased guitars,
and synth squeals, imploring you to never fall in love
again, especially with his band, because he's probably about
to quit it and start a new one.

High on Fire: "Hung, Drawn, and Quartered"
After a polyrhythmic drum intro, this track explodes into a
blistering metal doom-march evoking the brutal 19th Century
British execution method, because metal can't all be about
flowers and sunshine.

Thee Oh Sees: "Ghost in the Trees"
Dishing out cocophonously hypnotic vibes and eerily sexy
male/female vocals, these San Fran rockers are constantly
changing their name, e.g., The Ohsees, OCS, and Orange
County Sound -- if they ever go by "The OC", they'll simply
have to get Gallagher as an opening act.

Death: "Politicians In My Eyes"
This recently reunited early '70s proto-punk band was
churning out politically charged anthems while the Sex
Pistols were still just picking their nose in middle school,
rather than on stage.

Major Lazer: "Hold the Line"
Diplo/Switch alias Major Lazer fuses spaghetti western
guitars and Jamaican dancehall riddims into a club banger of
such epic proportions, you'll have no choice but to shake
your own epic proportions.

Harlem: "Witch Greens"
This homegrown, caustic, fuzzed-out foot-stomper was lifted
off the antihero garage-rockers' debut album, Free Drugs ;)
-- some bands just wear their emoticons on their sleeves.
