Nearly half of U.S. births are minorities.

DURHAM, N.H. (UPI) -- Minorities accounted for 48 percent of U.S. children born in 2009, researchers found.

"Widely quoted U.S. Census projections suggest America may become a minority-majority country by the middle of the century," Kenneth Johnson, a professor of sociology and senior demographer at the University of New Hampshire Carsey Institute, and Daniel Lichter of Cornell University said in a statement.

"Our research shows that for America's children and youth, that future is here already."

Forty-seven percent of U.S. children under age 5 and 40 percent of those in the 15-19 age group are minorities, the researchers said.

In contrast, 31 percent of people 20 and older are minorities, they said.

A key reason for the growing child diversity is the changing mix of women in their prime child-bearing years -- 20-39 years old, the study said.

Using U.S. Census data, the researchers found that from 1990-2008, the number of non-Hispanic white women in prime child-bearing years decreased 19 percent while the number of minority women increased 40 percent.

The findings are published in the journal Population and Development Review.

Study: Oral contraceptives cut cancer risk

ABERDEEN, Scotland (UPI) -- A 40-year study showed oral contraceptives reduced the risk of cancer and extended some women's lives, researchers in Scotland said.

The study, led by the University of Aberdeen, appears to contradict previous studies showing oral contraceptives increased the risk of blood clots and breast cancer, The Scotsman reported Friday.

University researchers who studied more than 46,000 women for four decades found women who had used oral contraceptives, even for a short time, could expect to live longer than women who had never taken them.

Women who used oral contraceptives, commonly called the Pill, were 12 percent less likely to die from any illness, including cancer and heart disease, said lead researcher Philip Hannaford.

The findings do not mean women should take oral contraceptives because they think it might improve their health.

"We don't know if the beneficial effects are a result of the contraceptive, or the type of women who go on the Pill," Hannaford said, adding the findings might not reflect the experience of women who use modern oral contraceptives.

Deep breathing, soft music reduces stress

SEATTLE (UPI) -- Deep breathing while listening to soft music relieves stress as much as an expensive massage, health researchers in Seattle said.

Scientists at the Group Health Research Institute divided 68 stressed-out patients into three groups for 10 treatments of deep breathing, massage or theromtherapy -- wrapping the body in warm towels, The New York Daily News reported Friday.

All of the treatments occurred in a dimly lit room with soft music playing, researcher Karen Sherman wrote in a recent issue of the journal Depression and Anxiety.

At the end of the treatment period, the anxiety of participants in all three groups had dropped by about 40 percent, Sherman told The Daily Telegraph.

"We were surprised to find that the benefits of massage were no greater than those of the same number of sessions of 'thermotherapy' or listening to relaxing music," Sherman said. "This suggests that the benefits of massage may be due to a generalized relaxation response."

Amnesty: Maternal health not addressed

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Amnesty International says healthcare reform proposals in the U.S. Congress fail to address the crisis of maternal health in the United States.

In a report released Friday, the organization said its analysis indicates the legislation won't fix the problems.

"Reform is primarily focused on healthcare coverage and reducing healthcare costs, and even optimistic estimates predict that any proposal on the table will leave millions without access to affordable care," said Rachel Ward, one of the authors of the report.

Ward says the proposed legislation doesn't address discrimination, systemic failures and the lack of government accountability documented in Amnesty International's latest report on maternal healthcare.

The report, entitled "Deadly Delivery: The Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA," says the lifetime risk of maternal death in the United States is greater than in 40 other countries.

Obstacles to care are widespread in the United States, especially for minorities, the report says.
