BEAGLEBOARD GETS WINDOWS CE UPDATE, WILL REV TO 1GHZ
MPC Data announced a Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 board support package (BSP) for a low-cost SBC (single board computer) distributed by Digi-Key. Clocked at 720MHz, with a 1GHz "xM" version in the works, the BeagleBoard lets low-volume embedded developers, hobbyists, and students evaluate ARM's Cortex-A8 architecture, the companies say.

INTEL SCRAPS DISCRETE GPU PLANS
Intel has, "at least in the short term," canceled its plans to bring a discrete GPU (graphics processing unit) to market. The move follows the company's having missed "key product milestones" for a planned product codenamed Larrabee, spokesperson Bill Kircos wrote in a blog entry today.

OPERA BROWSER HEADS FOR TABLETS
Opera Software says it will unveil a new web browser aimed at e-readers and tablets at next month's Computex show in Taiwan. "Opera for tablets" will be "touch-optimized" and deliver "out-of-the-box productive quality" for both Windows CE and Android devices, the company says.

MICROSOFT SHAKES UP ENTERTAINMENT AND DEVICES DIVISION
Microsoft announced a major shakeup in its Entertainment and Devices (E D) division, responsible for Windows Embedded operating systems and Windows Mobile phones. Division president Robbie Bach will retire this fall, and J Allard, senior vice president of design and development, will also be leaving, the company says.

LG SPINS DROID-LIKE WINDOWS PHONE
LG and Verizon Wireless announced a new Windows Mobile 6.5 phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The Fathom has a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a five-way controller, 802.11b/g/n wireless networking, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, a microSD slot, and USB mass storage mode, says Verizon.

HYBRID HARD DISK GETS FLASHY SPEED BOOST
Seagate announced what it's calling the "world's fastest 2.5-inch laptop PC hard drive," combining 7200rpm rotating platters with 4GB of solid-state memory. The OS-independent Momentus XT boots up to 100 percent faster than traditional laptop drives, but costs much less than SSDs (solid state disks), the company claims.

WINDOWS CE/ANDROID PMP READY TO SHIP AT LAST?
Korean firm Yukyung appears to be readying a PMP (portable media player) that boots into either Windows CE 6.0 or Android. The Viliv P3 Prime has a 3.7-inch AMOLED (active matrix organic light emitting diode) display, includes wireless networking, has HDMI output and a microSD slot, and weighs just 3.7 ounces, the company says.

INTEL SLIMS DOWN CORES FOR THINNER LAPTOPS
Intel announced six new 32nm processors intended for ultra-thin laptops. Topped by the Core i7-660UM, with a clock speed of 1.33GHz and "TurboBoost" frequency of 2.4GHz, the CPUs will be available next month in devices from Acer, Asus, Gateway, and Lenovo, the chipmaker says.

HP'S WINDOWS 7 SLATE ON TRACK AMIDST WEBOS ONSLAUGHT?
HP will use the Linux-based WebOS operating system it is acquiring from Palm for smartphones, tablets, and printers, but not in netbooks, say reports from HP's positive earnings call earlier this week. Meanwhile, the company's Windows 7-based Slate is on track for delivery this fall, an eWEEK report suggests.

CAPACITIVE TOUCHSCREENS GET LARGER, SUPPORT STYLUSES
Atmel announced a microcontroller for capacitive touchscreens that allows operation via gloved hands or styluses, supporting screens up to 15.6 inches. The maXTouch technology uses under 1.8mW in a "touch-ready" state and performs "three times better" than competitive products, the company says.

WINDOWS MOBILE 6.X USERS GET BROWSER UPDATE
Keeping the faith with Windows Mobile 6.x users, Access announced a revised version of its NetFront web browser for Windows Mobile devices. The latest "NetFront Browser v4.0 for Windows Mobile Concept Version" now features "smart-fit" rendering, includes a virtual pointer in all display modes, and offers improved stability.

NEC PHONE'S STYLED LIKE MINI-LAPTOP
Is it a mobile phone, a MID (mobile internet device), or a mini-laptop? Hard to decide, but the NEC-manufactured N-08B announced today by NTT DoCoMo is said to include a 4.6-inch display with 854 x 480 pixel resolution, a QWERTY keyboard, plus a VGA-resolution webcam -- and it makes phone calls, too.

MEDIA TABLET MARKET TO GROW 57.4 PERCENT ANNUALLY, IDC SAYS
IDC is expecting worldwide media tablet shipments to see a compound annual growth rate of 57.4 percent, the research firm announced May 20. The figure would boost the 7.6 million tablets expected to ship by the end of 2010 to more than 46 million tablets in 2014.
