Sports Update For Indiana Saturday December 18, 2010 | Baseball Padres add infielders Hudson, Bartlett SAN DIEGO (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres bolstered the middle of their defense by signing second baseman Orlando Hudson and trading for Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett. The two American Leaguers will join centerfielder Cameron Maybin, who was acquired in an off-season trade with Florida, in the middle defense that last season included David Eckstein at second, Everth Cabrera, Miguel Tejada at shortstop and Tony Gwynn among a platoon of outfielders. Hudson is a two-time All-Star who has played for National League West rivals Arizona and Los Angeles. He hit .268 in 126 games with Minnesota last season. The San Diego Union-Tribune said Saturday that Padres signed Hudson for two years and would announce the deal once a physical exam was completed. Bartlett was the headliner of a six-player trade that included a player to be named later and sends four Padres farmhand, including three pitchers, to Tampa Bay. Johnson went 10-of-19 from the field and E'Twaun Moore contributed 16 points for the Boilermakers (10-1). Purdue was clinging to a 47-45 lead with 7:47 remaining when Moore canned two free throws to spark a decisive 9-0 run, during which the senior guard also hit two more foul shots. Kelsey Barlow grabbed 11 rebounds for Purdue, which won despite shooting only 33.3 percent from the field and 3-of-16 from 3-point territory. Indiana State (5-6), meanwhile, fell to 0-3 against in-state rivals this season, after earlier losses to Ball State and Notre Dame. Dwayne Lathan led the Sycamores with 15 points and nine rebounds. (UPI) -- Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will miss the Green Bay Packers' next game, necessitating backup Matt Flynn's first career NFL start, the team said Saturday. Rodgers suffered his second concussion of the season Sunday in the Packers' 7-3 loss to Detroit, missing the entire second half as Flynn struggled to provide an offensive punch for the Packers. Rodgers also sustained a concussion in the season's fifth week against Washington but it wasn't serious enough to make him miss a start. He will now miss Monday night's game against New England -- his first absence since taking over as Brett Favre's replacement in 2008. Flynn was limited to just 177 yards and was intercepted once on 15-of-26 passing last week. In his 27-game career as a backup, he has thrown 46 passes. Rodgers, meanwhile, is the NFL's fourth-ranked passer with a 98.5 rating, tossing for 3,289 yards with 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. It was the second 65 in two days for Els at Durban Country Club and was good enough to separate him from first-round co-leader Retief Goosen by two strokes at 14-under 130. Els is seeking his fifth South African national championship. He birdied the fourth hole and notched back-to-back birdies at holes Nos. 7 and 8 to establish his two-stroke cushion. Goossen, meanwhile, posted a 4-under 68. A two-time winner of the event, he birdied the last hole to pull into sole possession of second place at minus-12. Nineteen-year-old Romain Wattel (66) of France held third, finishing two rounds at 11-under 133, while Louis Oosthuizen (67) was tied for fourth place with Charl Schwartzel (69) at minus-10. The plan is make up for the rain delays by playing 36 holes Sunday. More rain, however, is in the forecast. Copyright 2010 by United Press International | Hockey Fehr tapped as NHL players union chief NEW YORK (UPI) -- Former baseball players union President Donald Fehr Saturday was named the new chief of the National Hockey League Players' Association. The NHLPA said in a statement that Fehr, 62, had been officially hired in a long-anticipated move and will take control of the union immediately after serving as an unpaid consultant since November. "This process took a while because from the players' standpoint, they wanted to be sure and, from my standpoint, I wanted them to be sure that they had made a decision that they were comfortable with, that all the players had an opportunity to have their say and that this judgment represented a consensus view of the entire membership," Fehr told reporters. "It has. That's both quite an honor and it is also quite humbling." Fehr becomes the fourth leader of the NHLPA since 2005. He spent 33 years with the Major League Baseball Players Association before leaving last year. He told NHL.com he's confident that players and management can work out a new collective bargaining agreement to replace the existing one without a work stoppage. The current labor deal expires after the 2011-12 season. Copyright 2010 by United Press International More in Hockey: Fehr tapped as NHL players union chief NHL: Philadelphia 4, N.Y. Rangers 1 | Other Swiss place first, third in men's downhill VAL GARDENA, Italy (UPI) -- Switzerland's Sylvan Zubriggen won Saturday's men's downhill in Italy by 6/100ths of a second for his first World Cup victory. Zubriggen flew down the Saslong course at Val Gardena in 1 minute, 57.21 seconds to edge Austria's Romed Baumann and third-place finisher Didier Cuche of Switzerland. Ten of the top 30 finishers started late in the racing order. "We had some fresh snow Friday, so it was a matter of finding the polished part," said American Steven Nyman, who finished in 18th place. "If you stayed on the polished part, you could make up time. Anyone could attack from the back and win this thing." Bode Miller was the top U.S. skier. He finished in 17th, 1/100th of a tick ahead of Nyman. A number of Saturday's competitors are entered in Sunday's World Cup giant slalom in nearby Alta Badia.
