Doctor: Hospital care not as good at night

LONDON (UPI) -- Women don't get the same quality of obstetric care when they give birth at night, one of Britain's top maternity doctors said.

That's because junior staff on duty at night can make poor decisions about care, The Guardian reported.

"Obstetric care isn't the same at 3 a.m. as it is at 3 p.m., and it should be," said physician Tony Falconer. "This is a matter of huge concern."

Falconer said the inexperience of doctors working night shifts in maternity wards means they lack the skills needed to ensure a baby's safe birth.

Falconer made the comments in his first interview since becoming president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

"Care overnight isn't as robust as it is at it is at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m.," Falconer said in an interview. "It's not as good. At 2 a.m., you do not have the same experience."

Falconer said junior obstetric doctors could lack the technical skills to use forceps or vacuum to ease a baby's birth.

"One of the ironies of the health service, and this view is shared by very senior people, is this culture that the (hospital) basically runs at one level for 40 hours a week, and at a completely different level for the rest of the week. And when you are dealing with acute services, that shouldn't happen," Falconer said.

U.S. not ready for 'silver tsunami'

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI) -- U.S. researchers point out 2011 ushers in the first baby boomers -- those born between l946 and 1964 -- turning age 65.

Researchers at the University of Alabama in Birmingham say as baby boomers age the number of people 65 and older will double from 2010 to 2050, with the number of those age 85 and older increasing fourfold.

This ever-expanding group turning gray has been dubbed the silver tsunami. To those who have been asking: "Will the country be ready to meet the medical and social needs of these boomers?" the researchers have a one-word answer: "No."

Look at the number of doctors, the researchers say.

"National estimates cite approximately 7,000 geriatricians currently certified to care for the rapidly growing boomer population," Dr. Richard Allman says in a statement. "Yet our society will need more than 20,000 geriatricians to accommodate the increasing demand for specialized care."

Of course, says Allman, the need for specialized caregivers for geriatrics extends beyond physicians and includes nurses, therapists, dietitians, social workers, community caregivers and more.

"Doctors alone don't deliver geriatric care," Allman says. "You've got to have a team to optimize the quality of life for older people."

'The King's Speech' wrong on stuttering

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (UPI) -- In the British movie, "The King's Speech," stuttering was thought to be psychological, but a speech specialist says stuttering is caused by brain differences.

Mark Power -- an American Speech Language Hearing Association board recognized fluency specialist, who directs the Power Stuttering Center in California -- says 1 percent of the population suffers from stuttering. The scientific research from the 1980s to the present clearly shows that stutterers and normal speakers have definite physical differences in their brains.

"Stutterers are slower at turning their voice on and off while speaking and stutterers use different parts of the brain to speak than normal speakers," Power says in a statement. "Stuttering runs in families and can be identified and passed on in the genes."

Now that the physical differences of stuttering have been identified there is greater hope for recovery by modern treatments that change the way stutterers talk so that they can resolve their physical differences, Power says.

The new therapies require intensive training to reconstruct speaking, but they are more direct than treatment of an emotional problem, Power says.

New indoor tanning law in N.Y.

ALBANY, N.Y. (UPI) -- Businesses providing indoor tanning services in New York state are subject to new requirements in 2011, meant to reduce potential hazards. officials said.

Richard F. Daines, state health commissioner, says the health risks associated with tanning are well documented and include skin cancer, burns, injury to the skin and eyes, premature aging of the skin and allergic reactions.

Under state law, New York businesses with indoor tanning facilities are now subject to the following requirements:

-- Operators must take steps to ensure that children under age 14 cannot use indoor tanning facilities.

-- Operators must ensure that children ages 14-18 have signed, in person, parental consent prior to the children using the facilities.

-- People 18 and older must be provided information on the dangers of indoor tanning, must sign statements indicating they are aware of the hazards and receive adequate instruction in the operation and use of tanning devices.

-- Operators must ensure that every patron has adequate protective eyewear for use with ultraviolet tanning devices at no additional charge.

"UV radiation produced by indoor tanning devices can cause the same damage to the skin as natural sunlight," Daines says in a statement. "Because the harmful effects of UV exposure are cumulative over time, indoor tanning devices pose the highest risk to children and young adults by increasing their overall lifetime exposure."
