Newcon acquitted of fraud charges

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- A federal judge in San Francisco called a fraud case against Canadian military supplier Newcon International weak and has acquitted the company.

U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel scolded the U.S. Justice Department for pursuing the case with "several years of criminal proceedings notwithstanding the paucity of evidence." Chrysler CEO took no paycheck for 2010

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (UPI) -- U.S. automaker Chrysler said its new chief executive officer, Sergio Marchionne, was given stock instead of a paycheck in 2010.

The CEO was given 361,446 shares in the company, but no cash payment, the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday.

Foreclosure crisis settlement elusive

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. and state officials are still debating possible settlements in the national foreclosure scandal, a spokesman for Iowa's attorney general said.

"We've finalized nothing, and we're still working on some very complicated issues," said Geoff Greenwood, a spokesman for state Attorney General Tom Miller, who is leading a challenge by all 50 states that alleges banks used fraudulent processing to foreclose on homes, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

In Britain: 15 percent down or no deal

LONDON (UPI) -- A research firm in Britain found banks had tightened refinancing terms to the point where borrowers need at least 15 percent down to get a new loan.

A survey done by e.surv found 42 percent of mortgage refinancing included deals were borrowers had at least 40 percent equity in their homes. Half of homeowners refinancing had at least 25 percent equity, up from 19 percent in August 2007, before the market soured, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.
