115-year-old gets gift wheelchair

MONTREAL (UPI) -- A 115-year-old, Haitian-born Montreal woman received a prayed-for wheelchair bought by friends she never met, her great-grand-daughter-in-law said.

Ciclia Laurent was born on Jan. 31, 1896, in Croix des Missions, Haiti, and moved to her son's home in Laval, Quebec, after the island's 2010 earthquake, great-grand-daughter-in-law Marie Lorna Pierre said.

Everything had been destroyed in the earthquake and Laurent joined her son without any possessions, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., reported Monday.

All she had was her youthful spirit, which was sorely tested by her frustration over her lack of mobility.

"She was staying at home because when we want to go far, we cannot go with her," said Pierre. "Every time she gets bored a little bit because she says, 'I want to go with you'."

Pierre said the family prayed for someone to help pay for a wheelchair. Several business owners and members of the community came to their aid and helped pay for the wheelchair. Now Laurent's body is having an easier time keeping up with her youthful spirit, the CBC reported.

"She's laughing, and she's making jokes. We're laughing with her. We watch TV with her. She's sewing. She does a lot of stuff, and it's fun being with her," Pierre said.

Laurent was presented with the wheelchair at a belated birthday celebration Sunday

"I'm going to go everywhere in Canada with my wheelchair now," said Laurent after receiving the wheelchair and taking a spin around a restaurant where the party was held.

Grilled cheese event raises $1,000

BALTIMORE (UPI) -- Organizers of the Grilled Cheese Cook-Off in Baltimore said more than 100 people were turned away from the sold-out charity event.

The Mount Washington Tavern, which hosted the Sunday event, said the Grilled Cheese Cook-Off raised $1,000 for the charity Moveable Feast, which delivers free meals to people afflicted with human immunodeficiency virus/AIDS and breast cancer, The Baltimore Sun reported Monday.

Kevin Miller, 43, chef at Widespread Concierge Services in Federal Hill, beat five other chefs to take the trophy and $700 prize in the professional category while Michelle Howell, 30, of Parkville, took home the $200 prize in the "home cook" category.

"I made my own brioche, a white bread enriched with egg and butter," Miller said. "I used an aged Gouda, Jarlsberg cheese, an herbed goat cheese."

Miller said the secret to a good grilled cheese is finding the right butter.

"Butter is definitely the key," he said.

Chicago school bans home-packed lunches

CHICAGO (UPI) -- A Chicago school's controversial policy of banning pupils from bringing lunches from home is aimed at encouraging healthy eating, the principal said.

Elsa Carmona of the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade Little Village Academy said pupils must eat the lunch served in the cafeteria unless they have a medical reason to bring their own food, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

"Nutrition-wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school," Carmona said. "It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve [in the lunchroom]. It's milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception."

A spokeswoman for Chicago Public Schools said there is no "formal policy" about the issue and the decision of banning homemade lunches is left up to the principals.

Some parents have complained about the policy.

"Some of the kids don't like the food they give at our school for lunch or breakfast," parent Erica Martinez said. "So it would be a good idea if they could bring their lunch so they could at least eat something."

Man pays $3.7M for 55555 license plate

MANAMA, Qatar (UPI) -- A man in Qatar paid more than $3.7 million at an auction for a car license plate bearing the number 55555.

The Arabic-language Al-Sharq newspaper said the man paid $3,761,570 to obtain the plate at the Manama auction, which began bidding at $1.1 million, Gulf News reported Monday.

The big sale, however, fell far short of the record for the most amount of money paid for a license plate. A businessman in the United Arab Emerates paid $14.3 million in a 2008 auction for an Abu Dhabi license plate bearing the number 1.
