Chimp yawning evidence of empathy

ATLANTA (UPI) -- When chimpanzees yawn they are not just sleepy, but are showing evidence of empathy -- just as humans find yawning contagious, U.S. researchers say.

Matthew Campbell and Frans de Waa Yerkes of the National Primate Research Center at Emory University in Atlanta discovered chimpanzees yawn more after watching familiar chimpanzees yawn than after watching chimpanzees they don't know yawn.

"The idea is that yawns are contagious for the same reason that smiles, frowns and other facial expressions are contagious," the study authors say in a statement. "Our results support the idea that contagious yawning can be used as a measure of empathy, because the biases we observed were similar to empathy biases previously seen in humans."

The researchers studied 23 adult chimpanzees housed in two separate groups. The chimpanzees viewed several nine-second video clips of other chimpanzees in both groups, either yawning or doing something else. They yawned 50 percent more frequently in response to seeing members of their group yawn compared to seeing others yawn.

The authors note chimpanzees live in small communities where unfamiliar individuals are by definition members of a separate social group. Therefore, the in-group/out-group distinction may be more absolute in chimpanzees than in humans.

The finding is published in the journal PLoS ONE.

Spring cleaning can reduce allergy trigger

DALLAS (UPI) -- Some spring cleaning may be in order for allergy sufferers because cockroach allergens have a bigger impact on allergies, a U.S. allergist says.

Dr. Rebecca Gruchalla, an allergist and immunologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, says springtime pollen remains a major cause of stuffy sinuses, runny noses and itchy eyes, but it's not the most prevalent cause of allergies and asthma in children.

Cockroach allergens are a real problem in the spring and they have a much bigger impact on kids with asthma than either dust mites or pet dander, Gruchalla says.

"Children who are allergic to cockroaches have more asthma symptoms and generally miss more school because of their asthma," Gruchalla says in a statement. "Inner city kids who live in apartments are most likely to be exposed to cockroaches, but they're everywhere."

Cleaning the environment can make a big difference in preventing allergy symptoms and asthma.

"Some cockroach preventive tactics include: fixing leaky faucets, caulking cracks, eating only in the kitchen and dining room, keeping food sealed in plastic containers and taking out the trash daily," Gruchalla says. Cold sores linked to Alzheimer's disease

ALBUQUERQUE (UPI) -- The herpes simplex virus type 1, which causes cold sores on the lips and mouth, has been linked to dementia, U.S. researchers suggest.

Principal investigator Dr. Elaine Bearer of the University of New Mexico with colleagues at Brown University, and House Ear Institute, says the herpes simplex virus type 1 infections grow inside cells and persist in a latent form inside nerve cells. Re-activation and growth of this infection contribute to cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease, Bearer says.

"Herpes infects mucous membranes, such as the lip or eye, and generates viral particles," Bearer says in a statement. "These viral particles burst out of the cells of the mucous membrane and enter sensory nerve cells where they travel inside the nerve toward the brain."

The researchers tagged the herpes virus inside cells with a green fluorescent protein and watched the herpes particles emerge from infected cells. These newly produced viral particles exit the cell nucleus and then bud into cellular membranes containing amyloid precursor protein -- the major component of senile plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients.

The findings, published in the journal PLoS ONE, indicate that most intracellular herpes particles undergo frequent, dynamic interplay with amyloid precursor proteins, which facilitates viral transport.

This dynamic interaction reveals a mechanism by which herpes simplex virus type 1 infection leads to Alzheimer's disease, which strongly suggests a causal link between herpes and Alzheimer's disease, the researchers say.

How cigarette smoke affects smokers

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Cigarette smoke can affect nearly every organ in the body by promoting cell damage and causing inflammation, U.S. researchers suggest.

Lead investigator Ping-Ching Hsu, a doctoral student who works in the laboratory of oncology researcher Dr. Peter Shields of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of Georgetown University Medical Center, showed how cigarette smoke produces different "metabolites" or active biological compounds, in individual smokers, compared to non-smokers.

The researchers analyzed hundreds of metabolites found in the blood and urine of nine smokers and 10 non-smokers and then narrowed the study down to the top 50 metabolites in smokers and non-smokers. The levels of nicotine-related metabolites varied in the smokers' groups and there were variations between men and women.

"This gives us an idea of how people produce metabolites differently when smoking cigarettes, which is based on their particular genetic profile and other biological and environmental factors," the researchers say in a statement.

The findings were presented at the American Association for Cancer Research 102nd annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.
