Plant oil may help reduce obesity

COLUMBIA, Mo. (UPI) -- Sterculic oil, a type of plant oil, may be able to reduce belly fat in humans, a University of Missouri researcher says.

James Perfield, assistant professor of food science in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, says sterculic oil is extracted from seeds of the Sterculia foetida tree and the oil contains unique fatty acids known to suppress a bodily enzyme associated with insulin resistance.

Previous research indicates reducing the enzyme in rodents improves their insulin sensitivity and reduces the risk of diabetes or heart disease, Perfield says.

"This research paves the way for potential use in humans," Perfield says in a statement. "Reducing belly fat is a key to reducing the incidence of serious disease and this oil could have a future as a nutritional supplement."

In the study involving rats genetically bred to have a lot of abdominal fat, Perfield added sterculic oil to the feed of some of the rats. After 13 weeks, Perfield found rats given a diet supplemented with sterculic oil had less abdominal fat and a decreased risk of developing diabetes.

Perfield presented the findings at the Diabetes, Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Dysfunction Symposium in Keystone, Colo.

Car crashes linked to more risk of pain

ABERDEEN, Scotland (UPI) -- People with bad physical or psychological health may be at risk of developing chronic widespread pain after a vehicle crash, Scottish researchers say.

Lead author Gareth Jones of the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine and Dentistry says he defines chronic widespread pain as the presence of pain above and below the waist, or on both the left and right sides of the body, for three months or longer.

To examine the relationship between different physically traumatic events -- traffic accident, workplace injury, surgery, fracture, hospitalization and childbirth -- and the onset of chronic widespread pain the researchers tracked 2,069 participants from the Epidemiology of Functional Disorders study, which provided data on musculoskeletal pain and associated psychological distress at three time points over a four-year period.

Of those who participated in the study, 12 percent reported new onset of chronic widespread pain, with more than one-third of these subjects more likely to report at least one traumatic event during the study period than other individuals.

After factoring for age, sex, general practice and baseline pain status, those who reported a traffic accident experienced an 84 percent increase in the likelihood of new onset chronic widespread pain, but there was no association with hospitalization, surgery or in women who gave birth.

The finding was published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research.

Elder abuse victims often abuse alcohol

CHICAGO (UPI) -- Not only are the perpetrators of elder abuse often linked to alcohol abuse, U.S. researchers say their victims also are more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs.

Lead author Lee Friedman of the University of Illinois at Chicago said the study found victims of severe traumatic elder abuse also are more likely to be female and suffer from a neurological or mental disorder such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

"Past studies have shown that alcohol abuse by the perpetrator plays a substantial role and is strongly associated with physical abuse," Friedman said in a statement. "Our findings indicate that alcohol abuse among the victims may be an important contributing factor as well."

Friedman and colleagues examined data from medical records of two Chicago-area Level I trauma units from 41 cases of elder abuse and compared them with a random set of patients age 60 and older from 1999 to 2006.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, found 29 percent of abuse victims in the study tested positive for alcohol compared with 13 percent of controls and that elderly victims of physical abuse suffered disproportionately from heart disease, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, mental illness and alcohol abuse.

Smoking ban: No drop in off-track betting

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UPI) -- A smoking ban implemented in an Indiana community did not hurt business at the off-track betting facility, U.S. researchers say.

Lead author Jon Macy, assistant professor at Indiana University's School of Health, Physical Education, said past research showed smoke-free laws do not negatively affect businesses, but the findings concerning gambling establishment were mixed.

"Prior research has very clearly demonstrated that laws prohibiting smoking in public places and workplaces have no negative economic consequences in multiple industries," Macy says in a statement. "Our study is one of the first to find that this holds true for gaming facilities as well."

The researchers compared per capita "handle," the amount gamblers spent per number of people living in the county, of three Indiana off-track betting facilities from 2002 to 2009. In 2007, in Fort Wayne, Ind., a smoking ban for all workplaces including those involving gambling was enacted. Researchers compared it to OTB facilities in Indianapolis and Merrillville.

The study, published online in the journal Tobacco Control, found per capita handle in all three facilities declined at a similar rate during this period. Unemployment rates were a significant predictor of the per capita handle but there was no change in the trend in per capita handle after Fort Wayne went smoke-free.
