Sports Update For Indiana Saturday April 9, 2011 | Baseball MLB: LA Dodgers 2, San Diego 2, susp. rain SAN DIEGO (UPI) -- Four rain delays in San Diego caused Friday's game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Padres to be suspended tied 2-2 after eight innings. The teams are to complete the game Saturday before the regularly scheduled weekend contest. Heavy rains led to play being stopped four times Friday for a total of three hours, 36 minutes. The game is to resume in the top of the ninth with the Dodgers' Matt Kemp on first with no outs. Juan Uribe is due to bat. The Dodgers used five pitchers and the Padres six. It was unclear what the pitching situation would be when the game resumes. Both of the Los Angeles runs were unearned. The Dodgers opened the scoring in the fourth when Casey Blake and Kemp both walked. They pulled off a double steal and Blake reached home on a throwing error by catcher Nick Hundley. After the Padres took the lead in the fifth, Casey Blake, who singled and moved up on a passed ball, reached home on a single by Kemp, tying the score 2-2. Orlando Hudson and Ryan Ludwick drove in the San Diego runs. (UPI) -- LaMarcus Aldridge led all five Portland starters into double figures Friday and the Trail Blazers battled past the Los Angeles Lakers 93-86. The Lakers lost their fourth straight to equal their longest such streak of the season and their lead over Dallas in the race for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference dwindled to a single game. Aldridge scored 24 points with 11 rebounds, helping the Trail Blazers to their second straight win. Portland remained a half game in front of New Orleans for the No. 6 seed and will meet either Dallas or the Lakers in the opening round of the playoffs. Gerald Wallace added 19 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists for Portland. Kobe Bryant scored 24 points for the Lakers, but he made only 10-of-25 shots from the field. (UPI) -- Rory McIlroy took the lead at the Masters Friday and then found that to win his first major title he would have to fight off a suddenly resurgent Tiger Woods. On another gorgeous day at the Augusta National Golf Club, the 75th Masters produced the prospect of a fascinating weekend duel between one of the best of the game's new generation and the player who defined the sport for more than 10 years before scandal derailed his personal life as well as his game. McIlroy, 21, shot a 3-under 69 Friday to give him a 36-hole total of 10-under 134. He suffered his first bogey of the tournament when he put his tee shot at the par-4 12th into a bunker. Jason Day, who at 23 is another of the sport's rising stars, played in the same pairing with McIlroy and finished one shot out of the lead. Day made seven birdies over the last 11 holes, including one at the par-4 ninth after he hit an amazing shot off the pine straw to within 3 feet of the cup. McIlroy and Day were the only two players ahead of Woods at the tournament's midway point. Woods, winless since his personal life began to deteriorate late in 2009, had played an indifferent opening round and bogeyed two of the first three holes Friday. He then put on a display that became commonplace during a career that has included 14 major titles and a lock on the No. 1 spot in the world rankings for more than a decade. Woods twice birdied three holes in a row, holed a 12-foot putt for a birdie at the 18th and shot a 66 to finish at 7-under 137. He was tied for third with K.J. Choi, who posted a 70. Geoff Ogilvy and first-round co-leader Alvaro Quiros shared fifth place at 138. The group at 139 included Rickie Fowler, Ricky Barnes, Lee Westwood, Y.E. Yang and 51-year-old Fred Couples, who shot a 68 and gave himself at least an outside chance of becoming the oldest major champion in golf history. Defending champion Phil Mickelson posted a disappointing 72 that left him eight shots off the lead. Fifty players made the cut, which came at 1-over 145. Among those missing out on the weekend's action were Padraig Harrington, Hunter Mahan, current U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, world No. 1 Martin Kaymer and Retief Goosen, who shot a 5-under 31 on the front nine Thursday and then played the next 27 holes in 9-over. Copyright 2011 by United Press International | Hockey NHL: Anaheim 2, Los Angeles 1 ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- Teemu Selanne scored in both the second and third periods Friday in rallying Anaheim to a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles. The Ducks and Chicago remained tied for seventh and eighth place in the Western Conference, two points in front of ninth-place Dallas with one game to play in the regular season. All three teams won Friday to set up the final drama in the race for the last two playoff spots in the conference. Los Angeles was passed in the standings Friday by both Nashville and Phoenix, falling to sixth place. Ryan Smith put the Kings in front midway through the third, but Selanne tied it 9:55 into the second and gave the Ducks the critical win by putting a wrist shot past Jonathan Quick 5:54 into the third. Selanne has 31 goals for the season. Dan Ellis made 23 saves for Anaheim. Quick stopped 26 shots. Ragan was clocked in 189.820 mph. His first pole comes in his 153rd Sprint Cup race. His Roush Fenway Racing teammate, Carl Edwards, qualified second. Ragan has never won a Sprint Cup race, having finished a career-best fourth on four occasions. The most recent of those finishes came in Texas two years ago. Clint Bowyer, Matt Kenseth and Regan Smith rounded out the first five qualifiers, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Marcos Ambrose, Joey Logano, Greg Biffle and Kurt Busch. Kyle Busch, who currently leads the points race, qualified 11th. He has a five-point lead over Edwards. Colorado defeated Dallas for the league championship last season but Ferreira got some revenge Friday with his first two goals of the campaign. He was named the league's MVP in 2010. Ugo Ihemelu also scored for Dallas (1-2-1), which had produced a lone goal in its first three matches. Colorado (3-1) was blanked after scoring eight times in its three outings. Ihemelu opened the scoring in the 26th minute off a corner kick. Ferreira's goals came in the 40th minute and in the opening moments of the second half. Copyright 2011 by United Press International | Tennis Wozniacki battles her way into semifinals CHARLESTON, S.C. (UPI) -- Caroline Wozniacki survived her second difficult match in as many days Friday to reach the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup. Wozniacki, ranked No. 1 in the world, fought off Yanina Wickmayer 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in their quarterfinal duel. Wozniacki needed two tiebreaks Thursday to oust Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Jelena Jankovic advanced to a semifinal meeting with Wozniacki by coasting past Christina McHale 6-2, 6-0. Peng Shuai will face Elena Vesnina in the other semifinal. Peng rallied to defeat Sania Mirza and Vesnina won over Julia Goerges. The scores of those two matches were identical -- 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
