Third graders breeze past school's 'net filters

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Seven third-graders in New York City have been reprimanded for viewing what officials called "inappropriate" images on school computers.

Public School 85 Principal Ann Gordon-Chang said the images weren't exactly pornographic, but the New York Daily News reported they involved part of the female anatomy.

Their parents were immediately contacted, officials say.

While Gordon-Chang said it was an isolated incident, officials are worried that the district's Internet filter was so easily bypassed by a group of 8-year-olds.

While one expert to the Daily News filters are not 100 percent effective, the city immediately deleted content on the machines and installed updated filters.

Brothers snag record bass off California

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (UPI) -- Battling the fish for almost an hour, two Southern California brothers hooked a world-record white sea bass off Laguna Beach.

Scott Caringella of Westminster told The Orange County Register Saturday he was alerted to the mighty fish by "a crazy flock of birds diving into this spot."

He hooked the fish with sardine bait and immediately knew it was a big one.

His brother Craig, of Foothill Ranch, let go of his own catch and seized the throttle for the 5-mile chase.

"Every time we had it, it would run," Scott Caringella said. "If my brother wasn't running the boat, there would have been no way we would have gotten it."

When the fish finally jumped, he said, "I knew right away it was a record. I pulled it back to the boat and my brother gaffed it. It was 76.4 pounds."

The previous record for white sea bass was a 74-pounder caught off San Clemente Island in 1982.

To make it official, the brothers took the bass to an International Game Fish Association weigh station.

Scott Caringella said the fish is already being mounted at a taxidermist -- after the steaks were cut out.

Postcard arrives late -- minus postage

HARTFORD, Conn. (UPI) -- A Connecticut woman says a postcard managed to reach her from Greece without benefit of postage, zip code or address -- 46 years late.

Vasilia "Vas" Mazzotta of Cromwell received the Easter greeting from her grandfather in Greece last month.

The postcard was addressed to "Miss Vassoula Sitara," Mazzotta's maiden name, "Hartford Con."

It was dated, "Athens 20 April 65."

"I almost didn't believe what I was reading. I must have read it three times to decipher that, wow, this is from my grandfather 46 years ago," Mazzotta, 59, told the Hartford (Conn.) Courant.

"Dearest granddaughter, On the occasion of Holy day of Easter I send you this card to take an idea of Athens. I want you to enjoy Easter with all family. Kisses to Dad Mom & Johnny. I hug you. Bapou," the card read.

Bapou means grandfather.

U.S. Postal Service officials say they're stumped how the postcard ended up sorted and delivered to Mazotta on March 26.

"There's no evidence on the mail piece of it being in the mail stream at all," Postal Service spokeswoman Maureen Marion said. "There is no postage and no bar code. It's a mystery in the mailbox."

"It touched me emotionally, how someone can love you after the grave. It's incredible," Mazzotta said.

Chicago cellphone shushing sparks fracas

CHICAGO (UPI) -- Chicago transit officials say they'll seek criminal charges against a man who allegedly swung at a conductor who had asked him to keep his voice down.

Kenneth Pollard, 30, of Chicago allegedly took a swing at the conductor who had admonished him not to talk so loudly while riding on a Metra train through Chicago's South Side Thursday evening.

The Chicago Tribune said the encounter led to a brief scuffle at a station in Hyde Park that was broken up by two off-duty police officers who were on the train.

The conductor reportedly dodged the alleged blow but injured his leg in the subsequent wrestling match.
