Greetings!

Thank you for joining us for this issue of Operation PAL News, we are grateful for
your continued involvement in this impactful outreach program.

After the heat of summer, the cool weather and back to school spirit are a welcome
combination to bring in this fall season.

A big thank you goes out to those who kept writing during the summer months. Recently,
we were fortunate to receive some lovely bookmarks and cards from Margaret from
New York. Also, we were pleased that the generous students at Mineola Middle School
in New York remembered and wrote to our wounded over the summer.

Before you know it, Veterans Day will be upon us! So if you can, we encourage you
to plan a project that will benefit our wounded. We've included a list of the "how
to's" for organizing a group writing session. It was sent in by one of our regular
writing groups, and we hope those ideas will spark inspiration for a card writing
effort of your very own.

Semper Family,

Barbara Gemmell

Christopher is a member of 3/5 "Dark Horse" and was wounded in Afghanistan by an
IED blast. We met Christopher last October after he had just returned to the states
and was still in the ICU. He's come a long way since then, but he still has a long
way to go. He is a double amputee and has many other injuries. He also had to have
major reconstruction surgery done on his right arm.

After many surgeries, Christopher is currently at home taking a well-deserved 30-day
recuperative leave. We know he will be visited often and treated like the true hero
he is. He says he is really looking forward to attending a football game.

The prosthetic work needed for his legs was interrupted when arm and ear surgeries
needed to occur, but rehab should start up again soon. He does not have any surgeries
scheduled again until January. In the meantime, when he goes back to the hospital
he will one of the first to benefit from the redesigned Walter Reed National Military
Medical Center facility for recovery and rehabilitation of members from all military
branches. It opened in August 2011 after much reconstruction. We hope the new facility
helps to quicken Christopher's recovery time. Until January, he will be able to
focus on prosthetic device development for his legs and on driving school, which
will literally provide his first steps towards independence.

Where Are They Now?

Former PAL Lance Corporal Michael, 1/1

LCpl. Michael [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=qovdcsbab&et=1107752720352&s=60280&e=001v9nPJfJqghGkNhaBCa8ea4ISKUu4ZKfwLGqdVoO-k7eJOI1yWK3GEZsAneSMPuGVyjjiAID_pOKSdpFil-xKcYwIjfhUbJjnsZHo4sWF9S3cgkG8iNq7YuqGZbLlYo2r6xT3CZtSY_l-WGGzRmYW89DAi-uULBmTErCWTv0v-pk=]Michael
was on our list from September 2007 to May 2009. His mother said that in the first
notification phone call she received, the USMC described his injuries by saying
her son was "full of shrapnel" and had multiple severe fractures from an IED explosion
in Iraq. When he came off of our list after two years, his father said he still
faced several more surgeries as his healing would allow. These recoveries are long
and arduous, but they are eased with continued support. In response to our recent
update request, Michael's father said, "What a nice surprise to know you're still
thinking of Michael!!!"

Michael was released from the Marine Corps in early August 2010 and is now home
and moving on with his life. His father says that physically Michael is the same
as he's been for the past couple of years, but mentally his outlook has been improving
every day.
