Working with Wonderful Wood By Dick Rank Atlanta, GA For months I had been working from the top of the "Dad, could you make a {fill-in-the-blank} for me?" list. Having recently joined a group of American period furniture makers, I was inspired to somehow find a project which would bring my skills up to a higher level. Being somewhat lazy, I have usually preferred making "not so fine" furniture. It fits my personality. Striving to reach perfection is not my style. At my age, it is simply unwise to even start a project that might take several years to complete. I have been told that I should not even buy green bananas. Lie-Nielson Tool of the Month: The #62 Low Angle Jack Plane This month we are featuring the #62 Low Angle Jack Plane, based on the Stanley 62. A 14" long cast ductile iron body and heavy 2" wide by 3/16" thick iron bedded (bevel up) at 12 degrees provides a low cutting angle that allows very smooth cuts, especially on end grain. If you want to add just one Lie-Nielsen hand plane to your tool collection, this one may just give you the most 'bang for your buck'.
Lee Laird, of Lie-Nielsen Toolworks, recently wrote a post for our blog about the versatility of this 'jack-of-all-trades'. Read Lee's post about the #62 Low Angle Jack: By Steven D. Johnson, Racine, Wisconsin This month, our Down to Earth Woodworker, Steven Johnson, has finished all the major construction on his garage-to-shop conversion. But now he must contemplate the question of when is "done" really "done enough?" He also goes into depth on the execution of his shop flooring and lighting choices, and tells the harrowing story of removing the garage door and installing a wall, a double door and a window in its place. This same phenomenon happens with other common materials used around the house, but in this case it can do a lot of damage to wood finishes. The off gassing of these common materials will soften and sometimes even melt a finish, requiring it to be completely removed to repair the damage. Here are SEVEN household items that should be used with caution: Ask the Staff Question: I am trying to find an adapter/extension that will convert a 1/4" Router to work with 1/2" shank bits. Check Out the Tools of the Trade: Another Testimonial for the WOOD SLICER I am not a big fan of the tool evaluations published in woodworking magazines. I wonder exactly who is buying the tools to equip the shops of these evaluators. Objectivity is elusive. I am a semi-professional; I have a real job to support my habit, woodworker with a well equipped shop. I do a variety of styles of large case type furniture projects. Resawing has always been a problem for me. My band saw is standard Delta 14" with a 93-1/2" blade. I have tried at least a half dozen types of bandsaw blades for resawing and always had marginal to dismal results. I bit the bullet and purchased some of your Wood Slicer band saw blades. WOW! Greatest thing since pockets on shirts, sliced bread, and stuff like that. Thank you for a really great product that actually performs in my shop on my machine. — Ron P.
