| | Today's Buzz | | | | | - Will the social Web be controlled by Facebook or Google?
Google and Facebook are headed for a showdown in the battle for social media dominance, write Miguel Helft and Jessi Hempel. Experts say the two companies will have to vie for the same social media market if they're going to continue to grow at the pace investors expect. The talent pool has proved to be a key battleground, with Facebook taking an early edge and poaching some of Google's top workers, but the search giant has vast resources, hiring 2,600 new employees in the third quarter alone. CNNMoney.com/Fortune (11/3) Network Update | | | | | - "Social Sentiment Slider" from Yahoo! may help brands go social
Yahoo! says it will add a "Social Sentiment Slider" to its news stories, allowing customers to use an interactive widget to answer questions such as "Is the iPod going the way of the dinosaur?" Officials say the widget, which will also connect to Facebook, offers a way for brands to engage with readers. "It's a new approach to social. What we're really trying to do is structure a conversation between the brand and the user," Yahoo!'s Patrick Albano says. | | - Social tools turn Clorox fans into innovation specialists
Clorox used its strong forum communities to get fans involved in developing products and other ideas, says the company's Greg Piche. The key to launching a "co-creation" initiative is that Clorox understands that its fans love to feel valued, and they're happy to talk about frustrations if they're asked, Piche says. The company uses a private community for its most innovative fans, which allows Clorox to focus the conversation and stay out of legal hot water. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Social Media (11/3) - Is EA catching up to Zynga in the social-game segment?
Electronic Arts, which is best known for its console games, is starting to become a player in the social-gaming arena dominated by rival Zynga. EA's "The Sims Social," which launched in August on Facebook, now has 38.3 million monthly active users and is second to Zynga's "CityVille," which has 54.5 million users. However, Zynga accounts for seven of Facebook's 10 most popular games and has more than 200 million monthly users, compared with EA's 67 million. The Wall Street Journal (tiered subscription model) (11/2) - Comedy writers say Twitter is no joke
Comics and comedy writers are embracing Twitter, using the platform as a sounding board for jokes and sketch ideas, and honing their skills along the way. Crafting funny tweets requires discipline and conciseness -- and a willingness to make a fool of yourself in public, the writers say. "I'm sure no one will admit it, but it's nerve-racking when you think a joke is great, and no one responds to it," comedian Aaron Glaser says. More than 4 in 10 young professionals say they would rather have Facebook access at work than a heftier salary, according to a study from Cisco Systems. "[I]f the Mad Men-era job force expected noon whiskeys and female secretaries, then our modern-day equivalent demands Facebook and iPhones," Austin Carr writes. | | The Takeaway | | | | | - Enterprise social media can pay off -- but not where you might expect
Businesses are still finding their sea legs when it comes to social media, but executives may do well to adjust their expectations, experts say. Representatives from AmazonWireless, Parallels and T-Mobile -- speaking at the Seattle Interactive Conference -- said that while it can be difficult to link social conversation directly to sales, these relationships can have other benefits. T-Mobile's Alex Samano said that engaging customers through Twitter and Facebook provides a level of insight that once would have required a focus group and big bucks to get. | | - Birds are still the tweet masters
Birds' tweets are more complex and nuanced than previously thought, scientists say. Researchers at Kyoto University found that finches modulated their tunes in ways that roughly correspond to human grammatical functions, and only increased their responses to other finches that were able to follow the correct patterns.
