The Playbook

Last-Minute Gift Idea: Dowdy Studio
1117 S Congress Ave; South Austin; 512.326.1648
P&L has picked up Dallas-based Dowdy's new run of musical shirts, stocking their shelves with the likes of Rock Hard (combines a guitar headstock with the int'l hand sign for rock 'n roll), the Native American-influenced Music is My Weapon, and Guitar Rooting, a tree/instrument mash-up that fortunately hasn't rusted.
See the entire line at DowdyStudio.com

Motor Pizza: Via 313
1111 E 6th St; Central East; 512.939.1927
Tossing their dough into the 6th St pizza ring, this Violet Crown Social Club-fronting trailer dishes it out "Detroit-style" with Sicilian-esque pies cooked in square steel pans formerly used on auto assembly lines, with crispy crusts covered in caramelized cheese, toppings under the cheese, and sauce on top. Styles include the Detroiter (smoked and natural cased pepps), the Carnivore (pepp, ham, sausage, bacon slices), and the cheese/ mushroom/ onion/ green pepper/ black olive Omnivore (remove the dilemma by adding double pepperoni).
Put your hands up for Detroit! Like Via 313 right here.

Grill: Flat Top Burgers
1900 Manor Rd; Central East; 512.391.0936
Supplying Cherrywood with a much-needed ground-beef fix, the long-vacant service station on Manor has just re-opened its garage doors as Flat Top: an Americana-strewn greasy-paper-bag spot flipping freshly-ground 80/20 half-pounders (grass-fed version avail for an extra buck), as well as "grilled chicken cheeseburgers" (which are actually just chicken), crumbly hand-battered onion rings, and Blue Bell milkshakes, which will be far more forthcoming than Blue Ball milkshakes.
They're also rocking green chile vegan burgers. You know you wanna like them on Facebook.

Ride It: White Horse
500 Comal St; Central East
From two notable Hole in the Wall vets looking to bring country to the East side, The White Horse (formerly Club La Trampa) is an old-school, Tejano-jukebox'd ballroom that will host live bluegrass/R&B/folk & country artists every night of the week and emphasize cheap drinking, from koozied canned domestics to the T.W. Samuels-fueled "S**tty Lemonade", after which you won't be able to stand no matter how many nickels people give you.

Moving On Up: 219 West
612 W 6th Street; Downtown; 512.474.2194
The Warehouse District happy-hour destination has moved into the old Union Park space, doubling dining-room size and adding an upstairs outdoor patio on which to enjoy dinner/drink pairings like Chicken Fried Ahi Tuna with a Ginger Martini, Grilled Lamb K-City Strip with a rocks Macallan 12, and Dogfish Head 60min alongside the Sugar-Cured Ribeye, which unlike the Sugar's-Cured Ribeye, costs more than a crumpled-up dollar.
They're def rocking a prix fixe NYE party, learn more at their Facebook page

Rewards!: Americanflat Indie Art
If you've got a friend who loves art, or at least loves the idea of not decorating with beer posters, snag some badass oeuvre from online art curators Americanflat. Sourcing from undiscovered painters, they boast work that's "museum-quality", yet nevertheless, is far better than the performances turning Ben Stiller into ancient history.
You deserve a Thrillist Reward
