12 Hangover Cures from Famous Heavy Drinkers

Posted: 01 Jan 2012 05:00 AM PST

How are you feeling this morning? Oh, yes, you were the life of the party. We shot a video and have already uploaded it onto YouTube. Hopefully it’ll go viral. In the meantime, get your head together by trying one of the hangover cures used by famous actors, writers, or celebrities. Here’s what Robert Mitchum used:

He made friends with hard-drinking crooner Frank Sinatra, who was indebted to the Night of the Hunter actor for a trusted alcohol antidote, dubbed by Mitchum as Mother's Milk. The Ramos Gin Fizz is a mix of gin, lemon juice, lime juice, egg white, sugar, cream, orange flower water, and soda water. It seemed to work for Sinatra, who took to calling Mitchum "mother" for years to come and supposedly even mailed him a card every Mother's Day in thanks. The Ramos Gin Fizz was also said to be a fave of Doors frontman Jim Morrison.

"Would Mahatma Gandhi Have Made a Good Software Engineer?"

Posted: 01 Jan 2012 03:00 AM PST

And would this be a good job interview question? According to one job seeker, an interviewer at the accounting firm Deloitte thought so. Here are a few others on Glassdoor’s list of the twenty-five oddest questions posed to job applicants during the past year:

2. "Just entertain me for five minutes, I'm not going to talk.”

11. "Given 20 'destructible' light bulbs (which breaks at certain height), and a building with 100 floors, how do you determine the height that the light bulb breaks?"

15. "How would you get an elephant into a refrigerator?"

21. "If you were a Microsoft Office program, which one would you be?"

Patrick Bérubé’s Incidence is a subtle work of art. At first glance, it’s a toy lying on a wooden floor. But upon closer inspection, you can see that he’s used the shape of the slats to create the image of a container ship traveling through the sea. This composition is on display at Gallerie SAS in Montreal through January 21.

Beautiful Skyrim Cover Performed On Violin

The soundtrack music for the video game Skyrim is quite beautiful already, but when Jason Yang and his violin play the songs they become a thing of ethereal beauty.

We’ve been seeing a lot of this type of video game and orchestral/classical music crossover (Final Fantasy orchestra, Legend of Zelda orchestra, etc.), and I’m sure that game soundtracks will continue to inspire musicians of all kinds to perform their own interpretations of these songs.

This eye opening, and beautifully edited, video shows a shot-by-shot comparison of Raiders of the Lost Ark and 31 other films made between 1919 and 1973.

To say that there are a few similarities would be an understatement, so obviously this is due to Spielberg doing his homework, right? *wink*

Over 300 Pounds Of Caviar Found In Russian Morgue

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 08:42 PM PST

Russian authorities made a fishy discovery this week, when a whopping 385 pounds of caviar was found stashed in a hospital morgue refrigerator.

The employees who were arrested for stashing the stuff claim that it was being reserved for a staff New Years party. Here’s why the St. Petersburg police were after the caviar:

Most of the red caviar was from salmon, but 38 kilograms (84 pounds) of the stash was black caviar from sturgeon, an endangered fish. Amid heavy restrictions on sturgeon fishing, black caviar is increasingly produced and sold illegally.

A day after the morgue discovery, St. Petersburg police said they seized an additional 100 kilograms (220 pounds) intended for illegal sale at local markets.

On Friday, the Interfax news agency reported that border guards in the eastern Ukraine city of Kharkiv confiscated 249 cans of caviar worth almost $22,000 that was allegedly being smuggled from Russia to Ukraine.

In the far eastern region of Khabarovsk, a vehicle inspection turned up 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) of caviar, leading police on a weeklong investigation, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. They raided a village home on Friday and found another 26 kilograms (57 pounds).

At two different spots along the Amur River basin, police found 47 sturgeon carcasses and 2.5 tons of live sturgeon. Sturgeon fishing in the Amur basin is prohibited.

Apparently, the war on drugs in Russia includes battling the sale of illegal caviar. I wonder if they have dogs trained to sniff out the fishy stuff?

A Gravity Defying Series Of Photographs

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 08:33 PM PST

It’s hard to make heads or tails of these photos, because photographer Philippe Ramette has manipulated them to create an uneasy sense of gravity defiance.

They provoke a feeling of vertigo in some viewers, and your mind will race to separate the elements of the photo and make sense of which way is up.

I really enjoy the clever way in which the people are worked into each scene, and how they often seem to be hanging out on the edge of nowhere.

SwapNote Is Turned Into An Old School RPG

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 08:24 PM PST

One of the great things about this hi-tech world we live in is the fact that most software applications have a multitude of other uses that have yet to be discovered, and even the programmers that created the software don’t know the full extent of what their software can do.

Case in point-this mod of SwapNote, a Nintendo 3DS chatting program that was modded by game design student Ben Gray and turned into a fully customizable text based roleplaying game.

Ben’s hacked version is so cool that each session can be custom created, and Ben even created a Dungeon Master template, to help with encounters and map creation. Dungeons and Dragons for the portable gaming crowd, now that’s an innovation I can get behind!

12 Weird Tanks and Armored Vehicles

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 08:00 PM PST

What is this odd helmet-like object? It’s an armored car built by Venezuela. Machinists at Puerto Cabello Naval Arsenal constructed the Tortuga (turtle) over a Ford 6×4 commercial truck chassis and usually armed it with a Vickers 7mm machine gun. They built only twelve because the Tortuga was hard to steer, poorly ventilated, and offered limited visibility to crewmen. This is one of twelve weird tanks and armored vehicles highlighted at Oobject. Check out the rest at the link.

Satyr Taxis

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 06:00 PM PST

You know how young boys spend class time doodling fantastic cars and spaceships? Cornelis Bos did the same thing in the 1550s, except at the time the fanciest mode of transportation was the chariot. He really souped them up in his fantasies! The picture here is described thusly:

Chariot of grotesques and scrollwork drawn by two fantasy animals and pushed by a satyr, whose head is trapped in a large shell. A satyr is in the car with a lighted lamp. [I]n print series of eight chariots of grotesques and scrollwork with satyrs, animals and various other creatures; decorated with trophies, garlands and vines. [1550]

China Turns Old Soviet Aircraft Carrier into a Luxury Hotel

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 06:00 PM PST

Launched in 1972, the Kiev was once the pride of the Soviet Navy. But in need of cash, Russia and Ukraine sold it and another carrier called the Varyag to China. Although the Varyag is at sea, China has converted the Kiev into a luxury hotel:

This is the Kiev, currently anchored in the Chinese port of Tianjin. Once she was the flagship of the mighty Soviet navy's Pacific fleet. Now she's available for business retreats, intimate getaways or simple relaxation.

That's because the Chinese have bought the aircraft carrier and transformed her into a floating luxury hotel.

The Kiev will stay permanently docked. Much as a Soviet-era sailor might resent the indignity, Kiev won't go back out to sea. She'll entertain guests and clients at anchor, a bizarre museum to a different country's naval power.

Want A New Tattoo? Let These 8 Year Old Twins Ink You Up!

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 05:03 PM PST

(YouTube Link)

When the proud father of 8 year old twins Eloy and Oraibi wanted a new tattoo, he didn’t get all liquored up and head to a parlor down by the docks. Instead, he let his kids take a crack at inking up their old man, and from the looks of it they had a blast!

Isaiah Toothtaker has been a professional tattoo artist for around 10 years, and he’s apparently decided to pass the tradition on to his little ones.

The results, as expected, are a bit shaky and very painful. I just hope his kids don’t take to covering themselves up with ink at such an early age.

(NSFW for one moment, when Isaiah curses due to the pain).

Lost Wedding Ring Found on Carrot in Woman's Garden

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST

In 1995, while baking in her kitchen, Lena Påhlsson of Mora, Sweden took off her custom-made wedding ring. She didn’t see it again until it turned up sixteen years later around a carrot that grew in her garden:

But as Lena was about to gather the last of the carrots from the family vegetable patch last October, she pulled out a carrot that had something attached to it.

As the carrot was so small, she was about to throw it away when she realized what it was that appeared to be "growing" around the finger-sized vegetable.

"Our daughter Anna was at home at the time and she heard an almighty scream from the garden," Ola Påhlsson told The Local, recalling the day of the miraculous find.

General Lee #1 For Sale

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 06:15 AM PST

Barrett-Jackson Auctions has a car for sale with some history behind it. There were many ‘69 Dodge Chargers used in the TV series The Dukes of Hazzard, but this particular General Lee was the one you saw jump every week in the show’s introduction (55 seconds into this video).

Featured several times in the first episode of CBS hit “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Fondly named “Lee 1″ is the very car used to jump over a Hazzard County police cruiser in the first episode. Carefully restored over a 16 month period to pre-jump condition.

Lee 1 was purchased by a California movie studio in 1978, soon to become “The most famous television car in the world.” Lee 1 was featured several times in the first episode of CBS’ hit television series “The Dukes of Hazzard.” This episode titled “One-Armed Bandits,” aired on January 26, 1979 and was filmed in the Covington, Conyers and Oxford area of Georgia. The show’s opening sequence, featuring Bo and Luke Duke, included the clip of Lee1 jumping over a Hazzard County police cruiser. That jump, for which Lee 1 is most famous, was made by a stunt man on the campus of Oxford College on Saturday 11, 1978. Lee 1’s first and only jump was 16 feet up and over the cruiser, landing 82 feet from the take off ramp. The only cast member that ever drove Lee 1 was John Schneider, who played Bo Duke. After 23 years in a junkyard, in Metro Atlanta, Lee 1 was rescued and professionally, passionately restored to pre-jump condition over a 16 month period. Lee 1 is truly an American Icon.

See plenty more pictures of the car at the auction site. Link -via Fark

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST

We’ve come to the very last day of the year 2011, a time to look back and think about what a year it’s been. Neatorama had a great year, and that is the result of the participation of a lot of people! Many thanks to all you Neatoramanauts, those who visited this site, and to those who entered our contests, submitted links, tweeted our stories, linked to us, emailed our links, and left comments. Thanks to those who purchased items from the NeatoShop. Thanks to everyone who joined us at our social networking sites this year. Thanks to Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader, The Annals of Improbable Research, and mental_floss for allowing us to share their articles. Thanks to the people at our partner sites and friend sites. Thanks to the creative folks who gave us material all over the internet worth linking to. And thanks to the authors, technicians, administrators, guest authors, contributors, and the many others who work behind the scenes to bring you Neatorama every day. I got a wonderful New Year wish from Eddie Deezen that I will share with all of you: “May the happiest days of your past be equal to the saddest days of your future.”

Meanwhile, it is a holiday weekend, so you might have some time to catch up on the good stuff we posted this week. Jill gave us a timely post that might come in handy for your celebrations: 10 Fun Ways to Ring In The New Year.

She also gave us Failed Flavors Of Popular Snack Foods.

Edifice Complex was from the newest volume of Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader.

The Annals of Improbable Research documented The Coming and Going of Cello Scrotum.

And 4 Amazing Powers of Chili Peppers was republished from mental_floss magazine.

In the What Is It? game this week, the object in question is a Holmes Steering Gear Clamp for towing automobiles (an antique). Aaron Rosen was the first commenter who knew what it was for, but he did not select a shirt. TDM had the funniest answer: A clothespin for chain-mail! For that, TDM wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop. You'll find the answers to all this week's mystery items posted at the What Is It? blog.

Over at NeatoBambino, we’ve had a rash of adorable child meme images posted this week, including this badass little girl walking away from an explosion -without looking back, of course. (Could this be a metaphor for the New Year holiday?) You’ll find cute kid videos, too, in addition to the normal news, information, and child product reviews at NeatoBambino.

If you haven’t checked out our Twitter feed or Facebook page or G+ site yet, this weekend would be a good time to do that! You’ll find plenty of “extras” that don’t get posted at the main site, plus active communities of Neatoramanauts with their contributions.

As we say goodbye to the year past, an easy way to look back on 2011 is to go to The Best of Neatorama, where our feature articles are archived by year for your reading pleasure. You can select a year with the slider at the top of the page. I recommend starting with 2011.

The next logical thing is to look forward to a great 2012! We have some improvements in the works that I know you’ll like, but we will still be bringing you new, interesting, and just plain “neat” stuff, so I sincerely hope you will join us every day of 2012!

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM NEATORAMA!
