The Playbook

Eat An Iron Taco: Austin Food and Wine Festival
April 27th-29th, ATX is going a little food crazy, with dozens of presentations covering everything from global street food (hosted by Andrew Zimmern) to curing hangovers ("Bartender of the Year" winner Jim Meehan of New York's PDT). Other highlights include a VIP tasting featuring Dallas's Tim Byres and Austin's Aaron Franklin, and the "Rock Your Taco Celebrity Chef Showdown", a battle royale wherein nine chefs including Tim Love and Morimoto will have no fear of stepping on each others' Dori-toes.
As a special treat to Thrillisters, they're giving away two tix (you & a friend) to the Taco Showdown. Shoot an email to austin@baltzco.com for your shot at them.

This Is Crazy: Go Loco's Mexican Fast Food
1104 W. Hwy 67; Alvarado;
The folks behind Blue Mesa are opening the first Go Loco outpost Monday in Alvarado, with numerous other fast-Mex locations slated to pop up on under-served highway stretches like so many Latin Dairy Queens, despite there being few Blizzards south of the border. Pull up in your Prius or commensurately eco-friendly ride, then pick a filling (barbacoa, green-chile shredded chicken, pineapple-chile-marinated pulled pork...) and a conveyance (tacos, burritos, bowls, nachos), or go for roasted Chimayo Market Corn w/ cheese and chile sauce.
Lemonadas & dulche de leche round things out. Hit their Facebook page for more, then hit the dang exit ramp.

Bloody Good: Garden District Bloody Mary Mix
From a Dallasite with four generations of Nawlineage, this family formula "tastes like a rare steak", and's made with 21 different ingredients that they swear "won't turn bitter when vodka is added". In keeping with the NOLA traditions of neighborliness and making sure everyone else drinks as much as you do, the stuff is designed to be gifted, along with cards like "Bloody Mary Christmas" and "Congrats on Getting Bloody Mary'd" -- ironically something you'll do multiple times unless you're Mormon.
It's avail at a handful of places locally, like Spec's Liquor & Bolsa Mercado; check out their fantastic backstory right here, then impress friends with your new bomb bloodys

At Urban Taco Uptown: 3411 McKinney Ave; Uptown; 214.922.7080
The greatest thing to happen to weekend mornings since aspirin, coffee, and more sleep, Urban's new brunch menu ranges from four-chile dry-rubbed arrachera steak (w/ an over-easy egg torta filled w/ potatoes, chorizo, onion & queso manchego, all dipped & roasted in guajillo salsa); to "Jalisco-style" roasted guajillo chile beef stew; to the sourdough, cajeta caramel, souffle'd banana, strawberry, guajillo candied-pecan, whipped Mexican butter & maple syrup La Jolla French Toast, a delightful variation on the Gallic tradition of "loud wedding guests spilling Champagne".
Get so Urban you're practically Keith, with this menu
