There are a variety of key nutrients found in our diets that are critical to activating
and maintaining healthy immunity. These nutrients are not only natural and effective
but safe without side effects. They are actually our true 'defenders' in coping
and fighting, when necessary, with the potentially hostile world around us. Allopathic
methods of boosting immunity with antibiotics may be not only ineffective at times,
but potentially dangerous. This may be due to the very nature of antibiotics as

performance. The key to optimal immunity is to keep it running naturally with optimal

One of the most interesting immune enhancing compounds is called Beta Glucan 1,3/1,6
. The Glucan is an all-natural, food-based dietary substance derived from from
the cell wall of baker's yeast (Saccharomyes cerevisae). Technically, it is a highly
refined carbohydrate made up of a string of glucose molecules, with the fats, proteins
and other polysaccharides removed. Beta glucan are found in oats, barley, mushrooms
and algae. An abundant of research has shown that some micro-nutrients and Beta
Glucan can activate specific immune cells and improve our immunity. [2]

The Beta Glucan works by stimulating the activity of our immune cells called macrophage,
what we refer to as white blood cells. They are responsible for a multitude of
actions which protect and enhance the immune system. Macrophage cells are one
of the principal cell types involved in natural immunity. They swallow up foreign
particles and destroy them. Macrophages produce chemicals that signal other immune
cells to move to the site of infection and produce such effects as fever. Macrophages
also produce growth factors for cells that repair injured tissues. [3]

Macrophages are involved in everyday detoxifying processes, intestinal flora maintenance,
anti-infective and anti-tumor protection and maintenance of overall health. Beta
Glucan taken orally through supplementation differs from other food sources. This
type of glucan is acid resistant so it passes through the stomach virtually unchanged.
Macrophages in the mucous lining of the intestinal wall pick up the beta glucan
particles through beta glucan receptors. Immediate activation of these cells follows,
and they are later able to travel back to the local lymph nodes (Peyer's Patch).
Then Beta Glucan can activate our natural antigen-presenting function which helps
T cells recognize a foreign substance. They also stimulate the release of chemical
cytokines (messengers) which induce a systemic immune response. [4]

Numerous scientific studies at Tulane University and Harvard Medical School have
confirmed that Beta Glucan 1,3/1,6 possess immuno-activating and protective activities.
Research at Harvard University in the 1980s by Joyce Czop, Ph.D., found specific
receptor sites for beta glucan that matches a site on the surface of the macrophage.
The Harvard University research demonstrated that the macrophage has a specific
receptor for beta-1,3-glucan. The Beta glucan acts as a 'nutritional key' that,
when inserted in the receptor site, turns on, or activates the macrophage. [5]
