With Desktop Virtualization, 90 Percent of Computing Costs Go 'Back to School'

Woodland Joint Unified School District, a Northern California school district has reduced the price of powering student computing by 90 percent by replacing 300 of its aging PCs with zero-client computing from Menlo Park, Calif.-based Pano Logic (News - Alert) , a leader in desktop virtualization (VDI).

Woodland is just one of a growing number of U.S. schools that are seeing a significant reduction in its total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) of computing by adopting a virtual desktop computing system.

The suburban school district of just over 10,000 students, located about 15 miles northwest of Sacramento, has reaped the reduction in energy consumption since last spring, when IT staff replaced PCs with Pano Logic in five K-12 computer labs. The savings have been dramatic, with zero-client computing seats costing just $5 per year to power—compared to $50 per year for each PC.
